A fixing member is spaced from a head actuator by a predetermined distance. A flexible printed circuit board extends at least from the head actuator to the fixing member. The flexible printed circuit board is superposed on the surface of the fixing member. A viscoelastic layer and a protecting layer are overlaid on the surface of the flexible printed circuit board. A clip clips all the fixing member, the flexible printed circuit board, the viscoelastic layer and the protecting layer together. When a head slider is positioned, the head actuator changes its attitude relative to a recording disk. The inertial force based on the rotation causes the first flexible printed circuit board to vibrate when the actuator block stops rotating. The viscoelastic layer serves to absorb this residual vibration of the first flexible printed circuit board. Vibration of the flexible printed circuit board can be suppressed.

A magnetic disk device comprises a magnetic disk in which a data zone is formed. An actuator has a voice coil and a head slider carrying a magnetic head, the actuator being swung to move the magnetic head over the disk between an innermost position of the data zone and an outermost position of the data zone. A magnet has a magnetization center and is opposed to the voice coil so that a voice coil motor which swings the actuator is formed, the magnet having a north pole and a south pole confronting each other via the magnetization center. The magnetic disk device is provided so that a deviation of a center of the voice coil from the magnetization center when the magnetic head is in the innermost position of the data zone is substantially equal to a deviation of the center of the voice coil from the magnetization center when the magnetic head is in the outermost position of the data zone.

The magnetic disk device includes magnetic disks, magnetic head arms and wind shield members arranged above and below the magnetic disks, respectively, in a region adjacent to the magnetic head arms. The wind shield members are arranged on the rotationally upstream side of the magnetic head arms, and the air flow generated by the rotation of the magnetic disks and impinging against the magnetic head arms is guided to the outside of the magnetic disks.

A disk device has a housing structure capable of reducing unnecessary vibrations of the base of the disk device by improving the rigidity thereof. A bath-tub type base of the disk device includes a damping structure on the bottom or on the sides adjacent to the bottom for attenuating the vibrations of the base. Apparatus for writing a reference signal into the disk of the device using a reference head with a head insertion hole formed in the base is also provided.

A disk device is disclosed in which an air inlet to an air passage for ventilation between inside and outside of the disk device is secured even when the upper or side surface of the housing of the disk device is closed, while at the same time suppressing the noises and vibrations originating from the disk device. A spindle motor for carrying at least a recording disk and an actuator for driving a carriage having a head for accessing the disk are mounted on the base of the housing. A cover is mounted on the base through a gasket thereby to hermetically seal the interior of the disk device. A ventilation structure is formed in the cover. This ventilation structure includes an air passage formed in the neighborhood of an edge of the cover, a filter-accommodating recess formed around the air passage, an air filter arranged in the filter-accommodating recess, an air passage formed through the base outside of the gasket of the disk device, a ventilation groove formed in the upper surface of the cover for securing communication between the filter-accommodating recess and the air passage, and a sealing member for covering the air passage on the upper surface of the cover.

In a disk device including, a carriage structure capable of reducing noise and accomplishing a high transfer rate. According to the first embodiment, an anchor member comprising a flat sheet portion and an extension portion and made of a sheet metal is disposed on the flat surface portion of the side surface of the carriage main body, and a flexible circuit board is wound on the anchor member and is, in this state, connected to the carriage. Therefore, a package area on the carriage side can be increased. According to the second embodiment, a control IC of a bare chip is packaged to a connection portion of the flexible circuit board and the carriage by a flip packaging method, and other chip components are packaged by a surface packaging technology. According to the first and second embodiments, the space at which the head IC, the servo IC and the peripheral circuits are disposed integratedly can be secured at the connection portion of the flexible circuit board with the carriage. Therefore, the noise at the time of read/write by the heads can be reduced and a transfer rate can be improved while heat radiation by the components can be taken into consideration.

A magnetic head for a recording and reproducing device includes an inductive head for recording use having an upper magnetic pole and an upper magnetic shield layer, an MR element of an MR head element for reproducing use and an MR detection head element for detecting an off-tracking. The MR detection head element and the inductive head are approximately aligned so that the MR detection head element is positioned over an adjacent track gap when the inductive head is positioned over a track. The MR detection head element detects positioning errors due to impact and vibration.

Disclosed is a magnetic disk apparatus having a large internal accommodation space. This magnetic disk apparatus comprises a case defining accommodation space inside, magnetic disks disposed in the accommodation space, a spindle motor, magnetic heads and a rotary actuator. The case includes a cover having a first flat portion and a first upright portion standing upright on the first flat portion at a peripheral portion thereof, and a base having a second flat portion and a second upright portion standing upright on the second flat portion at a peripheral portion thereof. This design can ensure a sufficient strength even if the case is made thin, thus allowing the internal accommodation space to be increased. The magnetic disk apparatus also has a printed circuit board, which is provided at the case and has a control circuit mounted thereon for controlling the magnetic heads. The printed circuit board supplies a source voltage to the case. Accordingly, the magnetic disks and the magnetic heads can be kept at the same potential via the case.

A breather filter unit for a magnetic disk drive including a base and a cover fixed to the base, the cover having a vent. The breather filter unit includes a casing fixed to an inner surface of the cover, the casing having a vent inlet communicating with the vent of the cover and a vent outlet communicating with an inside of the magnetic disk drive, and a first filter contained in the casing at a position adjacent to the vent inlet, the first filter being formed from a plurality of fibers extending in a direction substantially parallel to that of an air flow from the vent inlet to the vent outlet. The breather filter unit further includes a second filter bonded to the casing so as to cover the vent outlet, and an activated carbon layer contained in the casing at a position between the first filter and the second filter.

A magnetic disk apparatus including magnetic disks and a magnetic head assembly for access to the magnetic disks. The magnetic head assembly includes a head carriage having a hub and integral head arms, magnetic heads being carried by the head arms. A flexible printed circuit is attached to the side surface of the head carriage via a double sided pressure sensitive adhesive tape which provides a layer of elastomeric material to mitigate a deformation of the head carriage relative to the flexible printed circuit and the bearings supporting the head carriage to improve the off-track of the magnetic disks.
