A disk cassette arrangement which includes a double sided disk is arranged to be used in both dual and single head disk drive units. The cassette case is comprised of upper and lower halves or shells which are formed so that a reinforcing rib is defined when they are coupled together. A guide slot is formed in the rib. The cassette features a shutter which has a U-shaped cross-section and which is slidably disposed on the leading edge of the cassette case. A projection which extends from the inboard edge of the shutter has a barbed like arrangement which can be inserted through a tapered section of the guide slot.

An indicator for representing a selectable recording state of a magnetic disk cassette, for example, a write-protection state, wherein a sliding piece fitted over a thin flat part contiguous with an opening in a lower cassette half is selectively visible through a window through an upper cassette half.

In a disk cartridge in which a sheet-like recording medium is fixed to the periphery of a circular center plate which has an approximately square center hole and an almost rectangular eccentric driving hole, and a cartridge rotatably accommodating the sheet-like recording medium and including an upper half and a lower half having a turntable insertion hole in which the circular center plate is loosely fitted; the sheet-like recording medium is positioned in the cartridge by restricting the movement of the circular center plate at the central portion thereof, so that the diameter of the circular center plate can be substantially decreased and aberration of tracking or the like during recording or reproducing is avoided as much as possible.

In a flexible magnetic disc apparatus having a disc drive unit including a spindle with a cylindrical peripheral surface terminating at an upper margin thereof and a seating surface provided on the disc drive unit in a plane normal to the central rotary axis of the cylindrical peripheral surface, and a record disc including a flexible magnetic disc member, a reinforcing core member secured to the disc member at the center thereof and having an aperture for receiving the spindle and a reference surface engageable with the seating surface to limit the extension of the spindle through the aperture, spindle positioning projections extending into the aperture for engagement with the spindle therein and a resilient member extending into the aperture for pressing the spindle therein against the positioning projections; the top edges of the spindle positioning projections are located in respect to the reference surface so that, when the record disc is mounted on the disc drive unit with the reference surface engaging the seating surface, the cylindrical peripheral surface of the spindle always extends above the top edges of the positioning projections, not withstanding the standard dimensional tolerances, for ensuring that the positioning projections will accurately center the flexible magnetic disc member relative to the rotary axis.

A tape cassette is provided with a slider serving as a reel lock releasing element and which is movable in the front-to-rear direction near the rear of the cassette, along a path defined by a guide. A guide groove is formed in the underside of the cassette in alignment with the guide for the slider. The slider has a downward projection extending into the guide groove through an elongated opening in the guide. The downward projection is abutted by a projection built into the playback unit, and which is received in the guide groove for guiding the cassette during its insertion into the playback unit or VTR. Therefore, insertion of the cassette causes the cassette guiding projection to displace the slider for releasing the tape reels.

Magnetic disc or the like

A magnetic tape cassette is provided with a reel brake and a tape-protecting lid. The tape-protecting lid has side plates extending parallel to the side walls of the cassette casing and pivoted on the side walls. The reel brake mechanism comprises a brake plate free to move between a braking position and a brake-release position and normally biased toward the braking position. One of the reel brake plate and the side wall of the casing is provided with means for maintaining interengagement between the reel brake plate and the side wall so as to ensure cooperation therebetween for automatic brake release in response to opening of the tape-protecting lid.

A magnetic tape cassette includes a casing with a substantially straight side along which a peripheral wall has an opening for access to magnetic tape contained in the casing between its top and bottom walls which have edge portions projecting beyond the peripheral wall along the straight side, and a lid member having an elongated plate portion dimensioned to extend along the straight side of the casing and to fit closely between the projecting edge portions and ears projecting from opposite ends of the plate portion for disposition against respective end portions of the peripheral wall. Pivot pins are loosely received in respective, preferably triangular, apertures for connecting the ears of the lid member with the casing to permit pivoting of the lid member and its bodily displacement relative to the casing in directions at right angles to the pivoting axis. Thus, the lid member is movable, by a combination of the pivoting and bodily displacement thereof, between a closed position in which the plate portion is between the projecting edge portions at the straight side of the casing for closing the opening therein and an opened position in which the plate portion of the lid is disposed at the outside of the top or bottom wall of the casing adjacent the respective edge portion. Coil springs are connected between the casing and lid member of pivotally urging the latter to a neutral pivoted position in which the plate portion is centered between the projecting edge portions and bodily urging the lid member, in its neutral pivoted position, toward the straight side of the peripheral wall of the casing.

An improved disc cassette having a shutter-closeable aperture, wherein the shutter is moved against the force of a confined coil compression spring into an aperture-open condition and is there latched by a transversely deflectable latch pawl normally biased into latching position and operable by manual pinching of the cassette to release the pawl to permit the spring to return the shutter to the aperture-closed position.

A flexible disc cassette is provided with a shutter which is capable of opening/closing a head access hole and a pad insertion hole respectively formed in upper and lower halves thereof. A V-shaped torsion spring is used as the spring for biasing the shutter in the closed position. The lengths of the linear arm portions integrally formed with both sides of the coiled portion of the spring are approximately the same. Both tips of the arm portions are bent at approximately 90.degree. so as to form the L-shaped hooks which has the same length and which extend in the opposite directions along the height of the coiled portion. The L-shaped hooks are stopped by the shutter and the cassette case.

A flexible magnetic disc cassette contains a flexible magnetic disc. The disc cassette carries a slidably mounted shutter which closes or opens head access openings. The shutter has openings formed therein, and has projections inserted into a groove in the cassette for guiding the shutter. The edge of the disc cassette supporting the shutter has a plurality of projections which are provided for controlling operation of the shutter in association with the opening and closing operations of the shutter.

A tape cassette for use with a cassette adapter in a video tape recorder (VTR) of the type including a reel driving device, includes a housing; a supply reel rotatably positioned within the housing; a take-up reel rotatably positioned about a fixed axis of rotation within the housing and including a lower flange having a periphery; and an engaging device formed by gear teeth on the periphery of the lower flange, or a first gear rotatably positioned about the fixed axis of rotation adjacent the lower flange and having a periphery and gear teeth formed on its periphery; the reel driving device including a rotatable second gear having gear teeth for engaging with the gear teeth of the engaging device through an opening in the housing to rotate the take-up reel, or a cassette adapter positioned within the apparatus for housing the cassette and having a drive gear with gear teeth for engaging with the gear teeth of the engaging device through the opening in the housing and a drive shaft for engaging with the drive gear to control the latter to rotate the take-up reel. The cassette also includes a lid pivotally mounted to the front of the housing and a lid lock device for preventing pivotal movement of the lid to its open position when the cassette is not positioned within the VTR.

A reel on which a web, such as magnetic tape, is to wound is formed of molded synthetic resin and comprises a generally cylindrical hollow reel hub, a circular flange at one end of the hub and integrally formed therewith, and a rib portion generally closing off the other end of the reel hub. A circular sub-flange is thermally welded to the rib portion at that end of the reel hub, for instance, by an ultrasonic welding technique. In order to prevent the reel hub, in which the synthetic resin material may have undergone a dimensional change after welding, from causing undulations in an edge of the tape wound on it, the reel hub is provided with a thin cylindrical portion at the same end of the hub as the rib portion. The top of the cylindrical portion is separated from the sub-flange. The thin cylindrical portion can be defined by an annular recess in the end of the hub. In one arrangement, an annular cut-out is provided contiguous with the annular recess and the cut-out receives a mating projection on the sub-flange.
