An infrared communication apparatus and method enabling data communication with a receiving device, regardless of a protocol with which the receiving device is compatible. A transmitting unit transmits a first packet to inquire whether a receiving device is compatible with a first protocol and transmits a second packet to inquire whether the receiving device is compatible with a second protocol, to the receiving device at least once, and transmits a plurality of third packets to inquire whether the receiving device is compatible with a third protocol, to the receiving device. A receiving unit receives a response packet indicating a protocol with which the receiving device is compatible, from the receiving device having received the first packet, the second packet, and the plurality of third packets. A data transmitting unit transmits data to the receiving device, based on the protocol indicated by the response packet received by the receiving unit.

A communication apparatus () is a primary station for communicating with a secondary station, and includes: a first protocol control section () for transmitting, at a time when communication connection is to be established with the secondary station, (i) a station discovery command with which to confirm a presence of the secondary station, and (ii) a first connect request command, after the station discovery command is transmitted, so as to carry out connection processing; second protocol control means () for transmitting, at a time when communication connection is to be established with the secondary station, a second connect request command so as to carry out connection processing; and a protocol switching section () for (i) causing the first protocol control section () to initially transmit the station discovery command, and in a case where a response to the station discovery command has not been received after an elapse of a predetermined time since the station discovery command was transmitted, (ii) causing the second protocol control section () to transmit the second connect request command.

A digital information recording carrier has a planar recording surface having an information recording area in which cells corresponding to bits are virtually set in a matrix form, each cell being provided with an optically recognizable mark corresponding to digital information so that the digital information is recorded in the information recording area as a two-dimensional pattern. The carrier also has specific patterns each consisting of a plurality of cells which are linked together and which are given marks in a given pattern. Some of the specific patterns are placed in an inner portion apart from a perimeter of the information recording area.

A digital optical transmitter includes a main/subdata modulation part for distorting a main data modulated signal waveform in response to sub-data, and an E/O conversion part for converting a subsequently obtained electrical modulated signal to an optical modulated signal and outputting the optical modulated signal. A digital optical receiver includes an O/E conversion part for receiving the optical modulated signal, converting it to an electrical modulated signal, and outputting the electrical modulated signal. Additionally, the digital optical receiver further includes a main/subdata demodulation part for demodulating the main data from the electrical modulated signal, while detecting whether or not a distortion signal responsive to the subdata is superposed on a subcarrier which forms the electrical modulated signal. If the distortion signal is superposed on a subcarrier, the main/subdata demodulator part demodulates the associated subdata.
