An electrochemical cell has a container containing a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and an electrolyte. The container has a bottom face and a hole formed in the bottom face. A positive electrode current collector is embedded in the bottom face of the container so that the hole formed in the bottom face exposes a portion of the positive electrode current collector. A covering portion is adhered to the positive electrode and covers the exposed portion of the positive electrode current collector. The positive electrode current collector is electrically connected to the positive electrode via the covering portion. A lid seals the container.

In a method of reflow soldering, a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is discharged to a first discharge voltage different from a second discharge voltage at an inflection point in a discharge curve of the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery having an axis of abscissa representing discharge capacity and an axis of ordinate representing discharge voltage. The discharged non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is placed on a substrate which is then exposed to a reflow soldering temperature to reflow solder the non-aqueous secondary battery to the substrate. The first discharge voltage is higher than the second discharge voltage to prevent degradation of characteristics of the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery resulting from decomposition of the non-aqueous electrolyte due to reaction of the non-aqueous electrolyte with excessive lithium ions in the cathode active material when the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is exposed to the reflow soldering temperature.

Soldering method of nonaqueous-electrolyte secondary-battery

An electrochemical cell has an outer case formed of one of ceramics and glass. An electrochemical cell element is hermetically sealed in the outer case. The electrochemical cell element contains a positive pole, a negative pole, and a non-aqueous electrolyte containing an organic solvent. A metal layer is formed on an edge of the outer case. A sealing plate is resistance welded to the metal layer. The sealing plate is made of an alloy containing, in weight percentage, Co by 1 to 50%, Ni by 1 to 70%, Fe by 20% or higher, Cr by 10% or lower, Mn by 2.0% or lower, Si by 1.0% or lower and C by 1.0% or lower.

Electrochemical cell

An electrochemical cell capable of reflow soldering has a terminal for connection to a circuit board. The terminal is fixed to either the positive pole can or the negative pole can, and the bottom surface of the other pole can which is not fixed to the terminal is provided with a layer consisting of at least one of Au, Sn, Sn-alloy and Ni.

A method for producing an electrical double layer capacitor comprising the steps of assembling together components comprised of a positive electrode, a negative electrode, a non-aqueous solvent, an electrolyte containing a supporting salt, a separator, and a gasket to form a coin- or button-type electrical double layer capacitor, heating the assembled coin- or button-type electrical double layer capacitor so that a temperature profile of the heating step is approximately the same as a temperature profile of reflow soldering, and welding an outer connection terminal to the heated assembled coin- or button-type electrical double layer capacitor after the heating step.

Method of producing electrical double layer capacitor and method of mounting electrical double layer capacitor on a circuit substrate

An alkaline battery comprises a negative electrode having an active material comprised of mercuryless zinc powder, and an electrolyte. In one embodiment, the electrolyte contains one or more indium compounds selected from the group consisting of indium sulfate, indium sulfamate and indium chloride. In another embodiment, the negative electrode contains one or more indium compounds selected from the group consisting of indium sulfate, indium sulfamate and indium chloride. An improved alkaline battery is achieved which does not pose environmental problems, in which corrosion of the zinc powder by the electrolyte during storage of the battery is suppressed, and in which a good discharge performance of the battery is maintained.

Alkaline battery without mercury and electronic apparatus powered thereby

A non-aqueous electrolyte rechargeable battery is resistant to the reflow temperature during reflow soldering. The non-aqueous electrolyte rechargeable battery has a positive electrode having an active material comprised of an oxide of molybdenum, a negative electrode comprised of lithium and SiO, an electrolytic solution comprised of a material containing a supporting salt and resistant to the reflow temperature during reflow soldering of the non-aqueous electrolyte rechargeable battery, and a gasket comprised of a compound selected from the group consisting of LCP, PEEK, PEN, and tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether copolymer resin.

Non-aqueous electrolyte rechargeable batteries

An electrical double layer capacitor has an electrolyte included of a non-aqueous solvent and a supporting salt dissolved in the non-aqueous solvent. A pair of polarizing electrodes are disposed in confronting relation with one another. A separator is disposed between the polarizing electrodes. The supporting salt contained in the electrolyte exists only in regions proximate a surface of the polarizing electrodes when the electrical double layer capacitor is fully charged. When the electrical double layer capacitor is charged at 3.3 V for 24 hours, a charged current after 24 hours is in the range of from about 5 &mgr;A/cm to about 22 &mgr;A/cm per unit area of the polarizing electrodes.

A power source element has a positive electrode case, a negative electrode case, and a pair of connecting terminals, each having a first end portion connected to a respective one of the positive and negative electrode cases, a second end portion for connection to a circuit board, and an intermediate portion disposed between the first and second end portions. The intermediate portion of each of the connecting terminals has a weakened region so that the first end portion is separated from the second end portion along a weakened line in the weakened region upon relative movement between the first and second end portions in a give direction.

An alkaline battery comprises a negative electrode having an active material comprised of mercuryless zinc powder containing a gelling agent. In one embodiment, the alkaline battery comprises a current collector having an outermost surface coated with a layer of zinc or a metal having a hydrogen overvoltage higher than that of zinc, and an electrolyte containing one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of an indium compound, lead oxide; a hydroxide of alkaline earth metal and a surfactant having polyethylene oxide. In another embodiment, the negative electrode active material contains one or more species of materials selected from the group consisting of an indium compound, lead oxide, a hydroxide of alkaline earth metal and a surfactant having polyethylene oxide, and a current collector having an outermost surface coated with a layer of zinc or a metal having a hydrogen overvoltage higher than that of zinc. An improved alkaline battery is achieved which does not pose environmental problems, and which corrosion of the zinc powder of the battery is suppressed, and in which a good discharge performance of the battery is maintained.

A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery capable of withstanding a reflow temperature has a positive electrode having a conductive material, a binder, and an electrode active material selected from the group consisting of LiCoO , LiNiO and LiMn O . A negative electrode has a conductive material, a binder and an electrode active material selected from the group consisting of a titanium oxide having an anatase structure, lithium titanate having a spinel structure and a molybdenum oxide. An electrolyte has a supporting salt and a non-aqueous solvent having a boiling point greater than 200&deg; C. A gasket is comprised of a material having a heat deformation temperature greater than 230&deg; C. A separator is disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode and is comprised of a material having a heat deformation temperature greater than 230&deg; C. At least one of the positive electrode and the negative electrode comprises an electrode heat-treated to a temperature of 250&deg; C. to 450&deg; C. for deactivating a thermally active portion of each of the conductive material, the binder and the electrode active material thereof.

Non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery having heat-resistant electrodes

An electrical double layer capacitor has an electrolyte comprised of a non-aqueous solvent and a supporting salt dissolved in the non-aqueous solvent. A pair of polarizing electrodes are disposed in confronting relation with one another. A separator is disposed between the polarizing electrodes. The supporting salt contained in the electrolyte exists only in regions proximate a surface of the polarizing electrodes when the electrical double layer capacitor is fully charged. The non-aqueous solvent contains a preselected amount of dissolved supporting salt calculated from a surface area of the polarizing electrodes and a size of a molecule of the supporting salt in an ionized state.

A power source element has a container made of an insulation material. The container has an interior space containing an anode active material, a cathode active material spaced apart from the anode active material, and an electrolyte material. A first current collector is disposed on an inner base surface of the container. A first connecting terminal is disposed on an outer base surface of the container and is electrically connected to the first current collector. A second current collector is connected to the container. A second connecting terminal is disposed on the outer base surface of the container and is electrically connected to the second current collector.

Provided is a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery capable of ensuring good characteristics even in case of low-voltage charge at 2.5 V or so. A composite oxide of a compositional formula, Li Cu Ti O (with 0<a&lE;1, 0<b&lE;0.5, 1.5&lE;c<2) serving as a positive or negative electrode active material is mixed with an electroconductive agent and a binder, and shaped under pressure into electrodes for the battery.

Non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery with a lithium copper titanium oxide electrode

A 1.5 V non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery having high energy density, excellent charge and discharge characteristics and long cycle life is provided. The non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery uses, as the negative electrode active material, lithium-containing silicon oxide represented by the compositional formula Li.sub.x SiO.sub.y and defined such that the lithium content x and oxygen amount y are satisfied with 1.5.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.4.5 and 0&lt;y&lt;2, respectively, and also uses, as the positive electrode, lithium-containing titanium oxide represented by the general formula Li.sub.x Ti.sub.y O.sub.4 wherein 0.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.3 and 1.6.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.2.2 or lithium-containing iron sulfide represented by the general formula Li.sub.x FeS.sub.y wherein x.ltoreq.1.1 and 0.5.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.2.5, so that a secondary battery of about 1.5 V having high energy density, less inner resistance and excellent charge and discharge characteristics can be obtained. The non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery has high charge and discharge efficiency, does not cause defect such as inner short-circuit due to formation of dendrite, and it is very stable with a long cycle life.
