A data communications network that includes a data communications device and a midspan device where the data communications device directs data to computerized devices, such as IP phones, within the network and the midspan device provides power to the computerized devices. The data communications device and midspan device are electrically coupled such that the data communications device can monitor and control operation of the midspan device using otherwise unused pairs of conductors connecting the data communications device and the midspan device. For example, the data communications device can monitor and control an amount of power transmitted by the midspan device to the computerized devices over the network. Additionally, based upon the monitoring, the data communications device can activate an indicator, such as a visual indicator associated with the midspan device, to provide an indication of an operation state of the midspan device.

Method and apparatus for providing power to a computerized device

A system is disclosed as including a power supply, a secondary capacitive storage device connected to the power supply, and multiple network devices powered by the power supply. The system further includes a designated device for transmitting a power loss condition over a network, where upon detection of an imminent interruption of power from the power supply the secondary capacitive storage device exclusively powers the designated device during transmission of the power loss condition, and the multiple network devices are intentionally powered off.

A method for providing dying gasp support for a network component is disclosed. The method includes detecting an imminent loss of power to the network component and disabling all sub-systems of the network component except a designated sub-system of the network component upon the detection of the loss of power. The imminent failure of power to the network component is reported.

The device has a correction table for storing a digital pattern describing how a frequency of a signal is to be altered. The device also has first logic for receiving a sample signal and altering its frequency based on the correction table output to produce a desired output signal that is near a desired frequency. The first logic accomplishes this by dividing the frequency of the sample signal by a first or a second integer based on the correction table output. Further, the device has second logic for adjusting the frequency of the output signal to the approximate frequency of a reference signal. Additionally, the device has comparison logic for comparing the reference signal with the adjusted output signal and modifying the output of the correction table to substantially phase-lock the output signal to the reference signal.
