The present invention discloses a novel use of a lanostane having the following formula (I) in enhancing uptake of nutrients: wherein Ris either H or CH; Ris OCOCH, &#x2550;O or OH; Ris H or OH; Ris &#x2014;C(&#x2550;CH)&#x2014;C(CH)R, in which Ris H or OH, or &#x2014;CH&#x2550;C(CH)&#x2014;R, in which Ris CHor CHOH; Ris H or OH; and Ris CHor CHOH.

A pharmaceutical composition for treating diabetes is provided in this invention. The composition contains a lanostane compound as a potent component. A suitable source of the lanostane compound is aextract from metabolite, sclerotium, or fermentation product of(Schw) Wolf. Theextract contains 1-60% of the lanostane compounds by weight of the extract, and is devoid of secolanostane.
