A wireless communication system can include at least two base stations coupled with a network, the two base stations transmitting pilot signals that are used to make a soft handoff decision for a communication device based on base station related information received from the communication device, the base station related information being assembled within the communication device by continuously tracking selected base station pilot signals received by the communication device, the selected base station pilot signals sometimes including one or more pilot signals that are not assigned to rake fingers associated with a receiver coupled with the communication device, and at least one of the base stations delivering soft handoff information to the communication device after the soft handoff decision has been made by the network.

A search receiver within a wireless communicator uses an adaptive path detection threshold. By using a continually updated path detection threshold, a communicator may be adapted to the energy of a base station. A search receiver continually updates the path detection threshold to reduce a false alarm rate and enhance the accuracy of the search detector.

A receiver includes a searcher to identify pilot signals within a received signal and a pilot tracking unit to continuously track pilot signals identified by the searcher. The pilot signals tracked by the pilot tracking unit may include pilot signals associated with an affiliated base station as well as pilot signals associated with non-affiliated base stations. In at least one embodiment, the pilot tracking unit continuously tracks most or all of the pilot signals identified by the searcher.
