An initiator node adapted to provide quality of service (QoS) for an Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) environment is provided. The initiator node including an iSCSI initiator comprising a QoS shaper, the QoS shaper for shaping one or more Protocol Data Units (PDUs) according to QoS policies and providing shaped PDUs, and a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) layer for receiving the shaped PDUs from the iSCSI initiator and comprising a QoS marker for marking the shaped PDUs according to the QoS policies, wherein the PDUs are command PDUs and wherein the shaper shapes the command PDUs before the command PDUs receive command sequence numbers.

Quality of service for iSCSI

A method for providing quality of service (QoS) for an Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) environment is presented. The method includes the steps of shaping one or more Protocol Data Units (PDUs) in an iSCSI initiator according to QoS policies, and marking in a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) layer at an initiator node the shaped PDUs according to the QoS policies, and wherein the PDUs are command PDUs, wherein the shaping of the command PDUs occurs before assigning command sequence numbers to said command PDUs.

A computer connected to one or more networks through appropriate network interfaces is used to classify, manipulate, and/or control communications, e.g., packets sent and/or received over the network by one or more applications executing in the computer. Each application is connected to the network through one or more sockets to enable this communication. The computer also comprises one or more rule sets of one or more rules. A socket set of one or more of the sockets is associated with only one of the rule sets. The rules in the rule set are used to control one or more of the packets communicated by the applications communicating over the socket(s) associated with the respective rule set. Rules can be added to the rule set, deleted from the rule set, or modified in order to classify, manipulate, and/or control the communication of the packets, e.g. to control the rate at which the packets are sent or to provide certain security functions.
