Methods and apparatuses enable maintaining wireless connectivity while the wireless client device is in a power save mode. The system includes a host operating system (OS) that handles wireless connections while the device is executing in normal operation, and an embedded agent that handles the wireless connections when the device switches to power saving operation and the host OS switches to a sleep or standby state. The system detects a change in the power save mode and triggers an exchange of session context information between the host OS and the embedded agent (from the host OS to the embedded agent when the system enters the power save mode, and from the embedded agent to the host OS when the system returns to normal operation from the power save mode). The system also triggers the switching of management consistent with the passing of session context information.

Power saving operation of always-connected wireless roaming

An embodiment of the present invention provides a network interface card (NIC), comprising an intelligent wake mechanism and a device driver associated with the intelligent wake mechanism and configured to agree with embedded software on a set of wake codes and wake behaviors associated with the wake codes such that when the NIC encounters a wake event, the NIC first adds the wake code to a command queue, then it drives a PME pin to high to wake a device connected to the NIC.

Apparatus and methods using intelligent wake mechanisms

Methods and arrangements for wireless communications are described. Embodiments include transformations, code, state machines or other logic to adaptively change a snoozing interval of a station. The embodiments may also include determining a timeout (TO) period for a station, examining network traffic of the station after a period of network traffic inactivity not less than the TO period, and determining a snoozing interval, the length of the snoozing interval based upon the examination of the network traffic. The embodiments may also include adjusting the length of the TO period. In some further embodiments, examining network traffic may include determining categories of network traffic. In other further embodiments, examining network traffic may include determining a size of a queue of network traffic for the station. The embodiments may also include redetermining a snoozing interval after returning to a normal power mode.
