A novel renewable energy system is disclosed. The renewable energy system combines second life electric vehicle batteries to form an energy storage system. The energy storage system may compensate for large variations in operational energy and power requirements. The energy storage system is enabled through reuse of unopened electric vehicle batteries after their end first life use (e.g., in automotive use). The energy storage system within the renewable storage system may include a plurality of second life electric vehicle batteries, which may be configured to controllably store and provide power for a variety of applications. In some embodiments, the energy storage system may be operably coupled to one or more photovoltaics, fast chargers, or other variable loads that operate on DC currents. In various embodiments, the renewable energy system containing the energy storage system may require only one bidirectional inverter, which may be connected to a grid.

Method and system for using second life batteries as energy storage in a renewable energy system

A device for enabling the reuse of a complete battery pack for electric vehicles (EV) is disclosed. The device allows reuse of a battery pack at a significantly lower cost than alternative methods that require the battery pack to be opened, batteries to be taken out and installed in a new pack with a new battery monitoring system (BMS), and undergoing certification as a new system. The disclosed device includes a controller having a software program operating therein and which is electrically coupled to a battery pack and provides electrical input and output signals to the BMS of the EV battery, which relate to optimal operating parameters of the battery pack including depth of discharge (DoD), depth of charge (DoC), charge rate, and temperature. The controller enables reuse of the complete battery pack without reopening and mimics electrical signaling compared to a car or other electric vehicles.

System and method for reusing an electric vehicle battery

Understanding a health status and expected remaining lifetime of an EV (electric vehicle) battery is important before repurposing the battery for second life applications. A device for connecting to an unopened EV battery pack via operable coupling to signal and power wiring is disclosed. The device enables access to diagnostic information from the unopened EV battery. The device measures cell and/or module voltages and currents within the battery pack for several different depths of discharge. A self-learning algorithm implemented by the diagnostic device, which uses historical data and diagnostic information from the battery pack, determines a condition of the battery and provide recommended operational conditions for future use of the battery. For example, a degradation slope and expected capacity loss over time can be determined based on measured variations of cell and/or modular voltages and subsequently used, with cell impedance data, to recommend an operational C-rate for the battery pack.

A portable ultrasound probe is described having a mechanical transducer, rotating mirror, and mirror motor. The transducer can be used for diagnostic imaging and procedural guidance imaging. The probe has a light weight design for easy one-handed use, and can use external processors to provide proper image display with accompanying software.
