A hard drive includes an external hard drive and a stand integrally formed with the external hard drive. The external hard drive includes a housing maintaining a hard drive assembly configured to exchange data with a computer system, with the housing having opposing first and second major faces. The stand includes a first leg configured to project from the first major face of the housing and a second leg configured to project from the second major face of the housing.

The invention is directed to a wireless handheld device that securely accesses one or more remote devices subject to locally authenticating a user via biometrics. The device may be implemented as a wireless mouse with a biometric sensor incorporated with a scroll wheel that captures a biometric from the user and authenticates the user to the device using the captured biometric. More specifically, the captured biometric is compared to a template stored in memory. The device transmits a wireless signal, such as a command stream including the user's user name and password, to access the remote devices when the captured biometric matches the template. However, the device does not operate when the user is not authenticated. Accordingly, the invention may be particularly useful to log-on and log-off a user who frequently leaves and returns to a personal computer or various remote devices during the course of a day.

The invention is directed to a memory card that includes two or more connectors that conform to different connector standards. In one embodiment, the first connector conforms to a device communication connector (DCC) standard to facilitate direct coupling of the memory card to a portable device such as a voice recorder, a digital video camcorder, a digital camera, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a cellular phone, a video game, a digital television, a photo printer, or the like. The second connector may comprise a host computer connector (HCC) for direct coupling to a computing device without an adapter or reader.

The invention is directed to a device that functions as an adaptor for a micro-memory card. The device includes a port to receive the micro-memory card and an internal interface within the port allows for electrical connection between the device and the micro-memory card. The device also includes a card interface that conforms to a standard sized memory card. The device can be inserted into another device that accepts such standard sized memory card so that the other device can store data onto the micro-memory card connected to the port. In addition, the device also includes a host interface, such as an external shieldless USB tab protruding from an edge of the device, or a wireless USB interface to allow for wireless USB communication.

The invention is directed to a data storage device that includes a host connector to facilitate attachment to a host computer so that the host computer can access one or more storage elements within the device. The data storage device includes a flexible member to mechanically and electrically couple the host connector of the device to a housing that holds the storage elements. The housing may comprise a receptacle for insertion of the host connector when the device is not coupled to a host computer. The flexible member may define a length and a flexibility sufficient to allow the host connector to be inserted into the receptacle in the housing. When the host connector is inserted into the receptacle in the housing, the data storage device forms a loop, allowing the device to be attached to items or objects or possibly worn as jewelry.

A memory device is described that is capable of expanding an amount of storage capacity available to a host computer without requiring a user to purchase a new, higher capacity memory device that may be bulky and expensive. The memory device includes a host connector that allows a host computer access to a memory within the memory device. The memory device also includes a first set of electrical contacts accessible through a top major surface of a memory device housing and a second set of electrical contacts accessible through a bottom major surface of the memory device housing. The first and second sets of electrical contacts allow a device, such as another memory device, to couple to the host computer through the memory device. In this way, the amount of memory available to the host computer can be increased while maintaining a small form factor for each of the devices.

The invention is directed to a memory card that includes a device connector conforming to the memory card standard, and a host connector conforming to a host connection standard and comprising a retractable shieldless tab compatible with the host connection standard. The presence of the two connectors adds versatility to the memory card. The host connector facilitates direct coupling of the memory card to a computing device without an adapter or reader. The memory card maintains a form factor of the memory card standard when the shieldless tab is retracted, which allows the memory card to be used similar to a conventional memory card of the memory card standard. In order to fit within the memory card standard form factor, the shieldless tab may be an altered version of a conventional connector interface conforming to the host connection standard.

An apparatus, such as a reader, adapter, or other device, is described that is capable of receiving at least four different types of memory cards using a single slot. The slot includes a central region having a width to receive a memory card of a first type, first outer regions that extend the width of the central region to a second width to receive a memory card selected from a second type of memory card or a third type of memory card, and second outer regions that extend the width of the central region to a third width to receive a memory card of a fourth type. A plurality of electrically conductive contact areas are disposed within the slot. The apparatus may receive, for example, any of a Smart Media flash memory card, Memory Stick flash memory card, Secure Digital flash memory card, or MultiMedia flash memory card.

The invention is directed to a multi-connector memory card that includes a device connector and a connector that conform to a device connection standard and a host connection standard respectively. The dimensions of the memory card may substantially conform to dimensions of a memory card standard, such as a MultiMedia Card standard or a Secure Digital standard. A retractable sheath fits over a housing of the memory card to protect electrical contacts on the device-connector and the host connector. In particular, the retractable sheath that can be positioned in a first position to cover the host connector and expose the device connector, and a second position to cover the device connector and expose the host connector.

The invention is directed to a memory card that includes a device connector and a host connector that conform to a device connection standard and a host connector standard respectively. The dimensions of the memory card may substantially conform to dimensions of a memory card standard. However, there may be irregularities in the shape of the memory card that are not consistent with the form factor of the memory card standard. The memory card may further include a cover to fit over the host connector. In that case, the housing and the cover collectively define a form factor of the memory card that substantially conforms to a form factor of the memory card standard.

The invention is directed to a memory card that includes a host connector conforming to a host connection standard protruding from a flexible housing. The flexible housing conforms to a form factor of a memory card standard, substantially similar to a credit card with an increased thickness to accommodate the host connector and allow a memory to fit within the housing. The host connector facilitates direct coupling of the memory card to a computing device without an adapter or reader. The memory card may include a smart card contact conforming to an ISO 7816 smart card standard that allows the memory card to be backward compatible with conventional smart card readers. Unlike conventional memory cards, the flexible memory card is compatible with smart card applications, and unlike conventional smart cards, the flexible memory card includes a powerful, internal memory.

An apparatus is described that is capable of receiving a number of different types of flash memory cards using a single slot. The apparatus includes a housing that defines a slot to receive different types of removable memory cards. The slot includes a central region of a first height and outer regions of a second height. A plurality of electrically conductive contact areas are disposed within the slot. The apparatus may receive, for example, any one of a Smart Media flash memory card, a Memory Stick flash memory card, a Secure Digital flash memory card, and MultiMedia flash memory card.
