This invention relates to a developing unit for maintaining constant density in an electrophotographic imaging process. The developing unit has a developer roll, wherein the developer roll provides a surface and a first voltage is applied to the developer roll; a skive device, wherein the skive device is positioned in contact with the developer roll and a second voltage is applied to the skive device; a cleaning device for the developer roll, wherein the cleaning device is in contact with the developer roll; and an ink container, wherein the developer roll and the cleaning device are inside the ink container. It is preferred that a current measuring device is present to measure current flow between skive device and the developer, or a voltage meter is present to measure a voltage across a known resistor that is in series with the power supply to the skive device.

Developing unit and density control method in electrophotography

A process and apparatus prints images. The process provides an imaging surface; an array of styli opposed to the imaging surface; and a flow of liquid ink containing charged ink particles in the ink between the imaging surface and the array of styli. A voltage bias is established between at least one stylus in the array of styli and the imaging surface. The voltage bias plates at least some charged ink particles onto the imaging surface in response to the voltage bias.

A method of producing an image on a final image receptor from image data in a multiple pass electrophotographic system is provided. The method includes the steps of applying transfer assist material to an intermediate transfer member and providing at least one development unit including a photoreceptive element and charged toner particles. During each complete processing cycle of an intermediate transfer member, a toned image is created and transferred to the intermediate transfer member by application of a bias. In multiple processing cycles of the intermediate transfer member, the transfer assist material and the at least one toned image thereby form a composite image layer on the intermediate transfer member. The method further includes contacting the composite image layer with a final image receptor while applying a bias that is sufficiently strong to transfer at least a portion of the composite image layer to the final image receptor.

Method and apparatus for using a transfer assist layer in a multi-pass electrophotographic process with electrostatically assisted toner transfer

A method of producing an image on a final image receptor in a single pass electrophotographic system is provided. The method includes the steps of providing at least one toner development unit including a photoreceptive element and charged toner particles, and creating a toned image on the photoreceptive element that is transferred to an intermediate transfer member. The method further includes providing a transfer assist material development unit for applying a transfer assist material to at least a portion of the toned image to form a complete image layer on the intermediate transfer member, wherein the complete image layer is formed in a single pass of the intermediate transfer member. The method also includes contacting the complete image layer with a final image receptor while applying a bias that is sufficiently strong to transfer at least a portion of the complete image layer to the final image receptor.

The process comprises providing at least two radiation detectors that can move in tandem across a scan line, the two radiation detectors being spaced apart by a distance d; positioning the at least two radiation detectors at a first point on the scan line; scanning the at least two radiation detectors with scanning radiation and recording the position of the two detectors along the scan line and the time taken for the scanning radiation to scan from a first of the at least two radiation detectors to a second of the at least two radiation detectors while the at least two radiation detectors are positioned at the first point; moving the at least two radiation detectors to a second point on the scan line maintaining the distance d between the at least two radiation detectors; and again scanning the at least two radiation detectors with scanning radiation and recording the position of the two detectors along the scan line and the time taken for the scanning radiation to scan from a first of the at least two radiation detectors to a second of the at least two radiation detectors while the at least two radiation detectors are positioned at the second point.

Oxidation of volatile organic compounds in electrographic printing

A printer cartridge for electrographic printing (dry or liquid) is provided with two chambers connected by a developer transportation system that traverses a development zone in a first direction. As the toner (developer) from a first of the two compartments is fed through the development zone, excess or unused toner is transported by the developer transportation system into a second of the two compartments. When the first compartment has exhausted its supply of toner, there will be sufficient toner captured in the second compartment to allow for printing capability to be maintained in the system, without any replenishment. The direction of flow of developer during printing is reversed from the second compartment to the first compartment, passing through the development zone.
