An architecture for providing device software from a network peripheral device to a client machine. An end-user of a client machine connected to the network accesses the network peripheral device having the device software stored therein. In response thereto, the network peripheral device notifies the end-user that device software is available for download. The end-user then manually selects and downloads one or more components of the device software from the network peripheral device for subsequent installation on the client machine.

Download and installation of software from a network printer

A method is disclosed in which a print dialog is invoked to select printing options for a document. A department code is entered on the print dialog, and a print command is submitted while concurrently sending the department code for validation. A validation step is performed to determine whether the department code is valid. A print job is generated if the entered department code is valid. If the department code is invalid, the user is prompted to enter a valid department code.

Method of printer accounting management

There is provided a method and system for initiating an information transmission, such as with faxing, e-mail, data streaming, or the like from a personal computer on a network having at least one networked multifunction machine. The method comprises the steps of invoking a fax command from a software program on a personal computer and then viewing a list of machines residing on the network which contain local address book information. Upon viewing the list, a machine is selected from the list and a search is conducted through the personal computer for a local copy of the selected machine's address book information. If no local copy exists, a local copy of the selected machine's address book information is created on the personal computer. The local copy of the selected machine's address book is then used to retrieve address book information for selecting a recipient of an information transmission.

Method and system to access address books

A method is disclosed including the steps of submitting a print job to a network printer and identifying a specific printer controller governing the print job. The method further includes loading a set of identifiers respective to a specific printer controller and selecting from the set a respective identifier corresponding to the type of print job employed on the specific printer controller. The selected identifier is used to issue the predetermined type of notification from the controller.

Method of monitoring multiple controller families

A method and system are provided for formatting documents for printing in a selected format and resolution upon determination that the software program generating the print job is incapable of creating a document in the selected layout and at the selected resolution. The process of formatting the document involves causing the software program to generate a print job at a resolution lower than that selected by the user. Images of pages generated by the software program are then formed and printed at a higher resolution, such that the images formed on the printed pages are resized to fit multiple images on one printed page.

Method to dynamically perform document layout functions

A prefetch circuit for use with a memory including a storage register for receiving a command from the memory, a decoding circuit for decoding the command to determine the identification of an index register contained within the command, and a fetch circuit for fetching the contents of the index register from the command. The prefetch circuit also includes a virtual address storage register for receiving and storing the virtual address of the command, an adding circuit for adding a predetermined offset to the virtual address of the command to obtain a new virtual address, a comparison circuit for determining if the new virtual address from the adding circuit has crossed a virtual page boundary, a transfer circuit responsive to the comparison circuit for transferring the real address in the real address storage register to the adding circuit for adding the offset thereto, thereby obtaining a new real address. The fetch circuit then fetches a prefetched command from the memory at the new real address. Data registers are also included for prefetching data.
