A connection system has a high-density, high-speed connector that is electrically connected to a plurality of cables by a tiered circuit board. Edges of the circuit board are offset in order to form steps on which conductive pads may be formed. Each set of pads on a given step may be electrically connected to one or more conductors of a cable, such as a twinax ribbon cable. Thus, each of the cables may be coupled to one or more conductive pads on a respective step of the circuit board such that a large number of conductors may be electrically interfaced with the connector in a relatively small space, unencumbered by the bend radius of the cable. In addition, the cables may be coupled to the circuit board in a manner that does not require significant bending at the ends of the cables helping to preserve signal integrity. That is, conductive paths turn at high angles (e.g., close to 90 degrees) within the circuit board rather than at the ends of the cables connected to the circuit board.

Tiered circuit board for interfacing cables and connectors

Methods, systems, and apparatus for preserving timing domains of different communications types of signals in a telecommunications network are disclosed. In one aspect a network element (NE) includes a receiver configured to receive communications signals of two different communications types. The NE can include a timing analyzer configured to obtain a local reference clock (LRC), detect two different received reference clocks (RRCs) corresponding to the two different communications types, and for each received communications signal, determine a quantized value (QV) based on a difference between the LRC and the RRC. The NE can include a timing generator configured to generate, for the received communications signal, a transmit reference clock (TRC) that is referenced to, but different from, each of the LRC and the QV. The NE can include a transmitter configured to output an output signal based on the received communications signal and the TRC for the received communications signal.

Timing preservation for network communications

Systems and methods are disclosed that generally pertain to provisioning an optical network unit (ONU) by an optical line terminal (OLT) of a passive optical network (PON). An exemplary provisioning system includes a wireless reader incorporated into the ONU and a transponder unit attached to a fiber optic cable coupled to the ONU. The transponder unit includes a storage element in which is stored provisioning information, such a registration ID associated with the ONU. The wireless reader automatically obtains the provisioning information from the transponder when the fiber optic cable is coupled to the ONU and transmits the provisioning information to the OLT via the fiber optic cable as a part of a discovery procedure. The transmission of the provisioning information in this manner eliminates the need for a service technician to visit a customer premise and manually provide the provisioning information via a POTS port of the ONU.

Systems and methods for provisioning an optical network unit

Methods, systems, and apparatus for providing network addresses are disclosed. In one aspect, a network element device in a telecommunication network includes a chassis coupled with a passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) device and a network line module coupled to the chassis. The passive RFID device stores a network node identifier that is used to communicate with a second network element device communicatively coupled with the network element device. The network line module includes a RFID reader that is configured to obtain the network node identifier from the passive RFID device when the network line module is initialized.

Providing network addresses for network nodes

A system for dynamically learning virtual local area network (VLAN) tags comprises a switching element having a VLAN table and a media access control (MAC) table. For at least one VLAN, the switching element is configured to dynamically learn VLAN tags for packets carried by the VLAN in order to build the VLAN table and to then use mappings of the VLAN table, rather than mappings of the MAC table, to make forwarding decisions for all types of packets carried by the VLAN. The MAC table is not used for forwarding decisions for packets carried by the VLAN, but it can be used to help learn the VLAN tags. In particular, the switching element can use the MAC table to selectively trap packets when they are useful for learning VLAN tags and to prevent MAC learning traps for packets carrying VLAN tags previously learned by the switching element.

Systems and methods for dynamically learning virtual local area network (VLAN) tags

The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for provisioning nodes of a packet network. Rather than requiring a user to individually set the configuration parameters of each node to achieve a desired behavior, the user is presented with options of various predefined network behaviors and/or the option of customizing a network behavior, such as a queuing, scheduling, or shaping profile, and each node is configured to automatically provision its configuration parameters to implement the desired behavior. Information is passed from node-to-node so that each node can automatically provision its settings to implement such behavior. Thus, the network is automatically provisioned thereby facilitating the provisioning process. Automatic provisioning also helps to ensure a correct network configuration. Indeed, since the provisioning is automatic, at least some manual provisioning errors may be prevented.

Systems and methods for provisioning nodes of a packet network

Embodiments of the present disclosure generally pertain to systems and methods for policing packet networks. A system in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure includes an enqueue policer positioned within an intermediate node of a packet network prior to at least one egress queue. The enqueue policer utilizes information related to destination end-point capacity limits for a given customer in order to police packets based on such information at a relatively early point in the packet network. Thus, a packet that would have been dropped by an egress node due to capacity limits is dropped by the intermediate node thereby preventing the packet from needlessly consuming bandwidth of the network beyond the intermediate node.

Enqueue policing systems and methods

The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for protecting bonding engines in network communications. In one exemplary embodiment, physical communication links, such as subscriber lines, of a bonding group are terminated by a plurality of access modules such that at least some of the communication links remain operational in the event of a failure of one of the access modules. Further, a backup bonding engine is used to protect the group's bonding engine. In the event of a failure or other operational problem associated with the group's bonding engine, the backup bonding engine is used to fragment incoming messages and to send the fragments to the operational subscriber lines. Thus, the bonding group can survive an operational failure of the group's bonding engine.

Systems and methods for protecting bonding engines in network communications

At least one existing neighboring network device is connected to a newly deployed network device in a communications network. A network manager is connected remotely. The newly deployed network device is configured to determine its physical network connectivity by propagating a discovery protocol frame to the at least one existing neighboring network device. The frame in an example includes a field having a query that solicits from the existing neighboring network device the physical network connectivity data of the newly deployed device. This device is also configured to receive in response to the query, its physical network connectivity data and network data address of the network manager in a response, transmit its physical network connectivity data to the remote network manager, which in turn is configured to transmit provisioning data to the newly deployed network device based on the received physical network connectivity data.

System and method for locating, identifying and provisioning newly deployed network devices

An interworking function (IWF) is coupled to a switch of a packet network and communicates with the network switch based on an Ethernet clock signal or some other type of clock signal. A primary reference clock (PRC) of the network generates a PRC signal, and a timing analyzer determines timing information indicative of timing relationships between the Ethernet clock signal and the PRC signal. The timing analyzer periodically transmits such timing information, and the IWF uses the timing information to generate a PRC signal that is traceable to the network PRC signal.
