A method, article of manufacture, and apparatus for automating application activity is disclosed. In some embodiment, this comprises monitoring an active folder in a computer system for file events, triggering an intermediary application based on the monitoring, and activating an application based on the triggered intermediary application. In some embodiments, an application remote to the computer system is activated. In some embodiments, an application local to the computer system is activated.

Centralized file action based on active folders

A distributed storage space for individual users and their selected peers is provided. The personal cloud system allows an individual user to establish and maintain a shared data storage area on a network attached storage device connected to the individual user's private network and accessible to one or more network devices via a public network and the private network. The personal cloud system registers the shared data storage area with a central server and sends an invitation to one or more network peers to join the shared data storage area. The personal cloud system then monitors incoming data packets at the network attached storage device to identify requests from invited network peers to access the shared data storage area. Access is provided in accordance with predetermined access controls upon validation of the request.

A method, article of manufacture, and apparatus for storing information in folders is disclosed. In some embodiment, this comprises performing a setup process, determining an application and a trigger event based on the results of the setup process, and assigning the determination to a folder stored in a storage device. In some embodiments, a setup process includes gathering information from an email service provider, or other web services provider. In some embodiments, the setup process may gather information on a local application.

Active folders

A method, article of manufacture, and apparatus for allocating resources in a computer system is disclosed. In some embodiment, this comprises monitoring application activity triggered by an active folder, ranking applications based on the monitored activity, and allocating resources to applications based on the ranking. In some embodiments, a higher ranked application is allocated more resources.

A removable magnetic storage device uses an optical drive interface to appear to the operating system as an optical drive. Thus, a removable magnetic drive appears to the operating system as a large optical device similar to DVD/CD, and receives similar functionality. By appearing as an optical device, the removable magnetic storage device can use many features not currently available to magnetic storage devices, such as autorun, multiple volume sets, larger capacity, and efficient space allocation.

Use of an optical interface for removable magnetic media

A data file mirroring application that monitors data files stored in a source directory for archiving to at least two other backup data storage locations. Preferably, one of these backup data storage locations is on the Internet. The other may be a local data storage location, meaning a location that the host computer can access without using the Internet, e.g., a floppy drive, hard drive, high-density storage medium drive, etc. The user interface of the mirroring application flexibly allows the user to specify the source data to be backed up and the two or more backup data storage locations.

Method and apparatus for automatically synchronizing data from a host computer to two or more backup data storage locations

A system and method for automatically executing a participating application upon insertion of a removable media into a computing device. When the computing device detects that the removable media containing has been inserted, a task disk control file is read from the removable media. The task disk control file contains all of the configuration information necessary to run the participating application from the removable media. The participating application is then launched for use by a user. After the user is finished using the participating application, the removable disk is automatically ejected. In addition to monitoring for insertion of the removable media, events such as a completion of the self-contained application and a request to eject the media are monitored. When a completion event is encountered, all data files are saved, temporary files deleted and configuration information removed prior to the removable disk ejection. When an ejection event is encountered, the computing device is instructed to wait until the completion events are executed prior to actual ejection of the removable media.

Self-contained application disk for automatically launching application software or starting devices and peripherals

A computer recovery system provided on a removable high capacity disk. In the event that a user encounters an abnormal operating condition, the user inserts the removable high capacity disk into the computer and restarts the computer. The computer boots either directly from the removable high capacity disk or from a floppy disk which transfers control to the removable high capacity disk. The removable high capacity disk includes all of the files necessary to load the computer operating system and launch the graphical user interface of the operating system such that the user is provided with a familiar operating environment. The removable high capacity disk also includes a suite of software recovery software which attempt to ascertain and correct the cause of the abnormal operating condition to return the computer system to a normal operating condition. In the event the recovery system cannot correct the cause of the abnormal operating condition, the user may continue working with files located on the hard disk within the computer or perform a restore operation from an archive.

System for computer recovery using removable high capacity media

A large capacity removable media drive is integrated into a computer as a floppy disk drive. The method and apparatus are suited to an environment in which the removable media disk drive is configured as the first fixed disk drive in the computer. Thus, the removable media drive is recognized by the BIOS as a fixed disk drive. A substitute master boot record is provided to the computer from the removable media drive in response to a request for the master boot record of the media. Control of the boot sequence is thereby gained. The substitute master boot record loads a boot program that alters the operating system to recognize the removable media drive as a floppy disk drive.
