Nonwoven fibrous webs include elastic filaments such that the web as a whole exhibits elastic properties when stretched. The webs include a multiplicity of nonwoven fibers and at least one elastic filament entangled with at least a portion of the nonwoven fibers to form a self-supporting, cohesive, elastic nonwoven fibrous web. Methods of making such elastic nonwoven fibrous webs using hydro-entanglement, and uses of such webs to form articles are also described.

Elastic nonwoven fibrous webs and methods of making and using

A protection sheet and method of protecting a substrate is disclosed. In an embodiment, the protection sheet comprises an adhesive coated nonwoven material. In an embodiment a surface of the protection sheet captures and retains paint overspray, dust, dirt and other contaminants so as to provide a cleaner paint job. In an embodiment the protection sheet may be laminated to a second nonwoven or woven material to allow clean removal after extended use. The protection sheet may be used to protect horizontal or vertical substrates, and is particularly suited to protect the surfaces of a paint booth used in automotive spray-painting operations.

Articles and methods of masking or protecting a substrate

A coherent nonwoven fibrous web comprises directly formed elastic fibers that have a molecular orientation sufficient to provide a birefringence number of at least 1&#xd7;10and preferably at least 1&#xd7;10. The web can be made by a method that comprises a) extruding filaments of elastic-fiber-forming material; b) directing the filaments through a processing chamber in which gaseous currents apply a longitudinal stress to the filaments that attenuates and draws the filaments; c) maintaining the filaments at their orienting temperature while the filaments are under attenuating and drawing stress for a sufficient time for molecules within the filaments to become oriented along the length of the filaments; d) cooling the filaments to their orientation-locking temperature while the filaments are under attenuating and drawing stress and further cooling the filaments to a solidified fiber form; and e) collecting the solidified fibers as a fibrous nonwoven web. In a preferred aspect, the method includes the further step of annealing the collected fibers by exposing them to a temperature that is above their shrinking temperature but less than their relaxation temperature, and preferably bonding the fibers after (or before) the annealing step. Dimensionally stable webs comprising elastic oriented fibers are obtained.

Nonwoven elastic fibrous webs and methods for making them

The present invention is directed at a hook mechanical fastener/fibrous composite comprising hook elements on hook containing backing elements or a netting embedded in a fibrous web. The hook elements preferably are on backing elements that are connected or integral and can be strands oriented at angles to each other in a net form. The backing elements generally have a first outer face and a second outer face. The backing elements on at least one of the first or second outer faces have a plurality of hook elements. A regenerable gas filter cartridge for filtering particles from an exhaust gas includes a hollow tube having a perforated portion and an open end portion. The perforated portion has a diameter larger than the diameter of the open end portion. A filtering element is disposed on the hollow tube, and the filtering element extends over the larger diameter of the perforated portion and the smaller diameter of the open end portion.

An efficient, light-weight airbag inflation filter includes a gas-permeable, substantially rigid support tube having a plurality of uniform perforations therethrough. A filtering element formed from a continuous inorganic ceramic yarn or roving is helically cross-wound around the support tube to form one or more layers covering the perforations of the support tube. A wire screen, having openings therethrough smaller than the perforations in the support tube, is disposed between the filtering element and the support tube to act as a gas diffusion layer for the gases passing through the inflation filter.

An efficient, economical, compact diesel particulate trap has a plurality of perforated hollow tubes, on each of which a heat-resistant yarn is helically cross-wound to provide a plurality of layers that function as a filtering element. The yarn, which preferably is a continuous-filament ceramic yarn, has a core from which filaments or fiber segments project outwardly and intermesh with fiber segments of laterally spaced cores to provide traps. The cores of yarn convolutions of at least one layer are laterally offset from the cores of convolutions of an adjacent layer to deflect into tortuous paths gases flowing generally radially through the filtering element.
