An apparatus includes an elongated housing having a first plurality of sidewalls that form a first isolation chamber on a first side of the elongated housing. A first printed circuit board (PCB) includes a first patch element, wherein the PCB defines a first plane. A first parasitic element disposed in a second plane, wherein the first parasitic element is retained a predetermined distance from the first patch element in the first plane. A second PCB is disposed within the elongated housing. A first radio is disposed on the second PCB, wherein the first radio is coupled to the first patch element, and wherein the first patch element and the first parasitic element, in response to radio frequency (RF) signals from the first radio, radiate electromagnetic energy in a first direction away from the first isolation chamber.

An electronic device includes a metal housing having a height greater than a width, four sides that form an inner chamber in a center thereof. Four sidewalls extend from a first back wall form a first chamber located at a first of the four sides. Four sidewalls extend from a second back wall form a second chamber located at a second of the four sides. A first antenna is disposed in the first chamber. A second antenna is disposed in the second chamber. A circuit board is disposed within the inner chamber and oriented longitudinally from a bottom of the inner chamber. A first radio is disposed on the circuit board and coupled to the first antenna. A second radio is disposed on the circuit board and coupled to the second antenna, such that the second antenna is electrically isolated from the first antenna.

Described herein are unibody thermal enclosures for electronic devices. In some instances, the enclosure is a unibody structure formed by injecting a structural material into the tool suspending thermal absorbing/spreading material and thermal insulating material within a cavity of the tool. In other instances, the thermal absorbing/spreading material may be exposed to circuitry of the electronic device and the thermal insulating material may be exposed to the exterior of the electronic device.

Unibody thermal enclosure

A low profile accessory attachment mechanism suitable for attaching an accessory to an electronic device is disclosed. A straight hook and a curved hook are configured to mechanically engage slots in an electronic device, joining the accessory to the electronic device. By moving one of the hooks or altering the configuration of a slot, the accessory and electronic device may be separated. Additionally, the hooks may carry electrical current.

The structural rigidity of a device is improved by overmolding one or more layers of the device housing over the antenna components, improving overall wall thickness and avoiding air gaps present in conventional devices. Pull tabs are implemented for battery installation and removal using a stretch-release adhesive connected to the tabs that can hold the battery in place and, upon pulling of the pull tabs, cause the battery to be removable from the device. Camera sensors larger than the camera optics are usable in a device by utilizing only image data captured by those pixels of the sensor that correspond to the appropriate part of the camera optics. Mechanical interlocks can be used advantageously for alignment and connection strength for side soldering. Optical alignment processes are used advantageously in situations such as mounting a device camera relative to an opening of a light absorbing layer on a cover glass sheet.

Computing device components and assembly

A mobile computing device is provided that includes a housing, a display screen, and a keypad. The housing includes a front face having a portion that has a contour. The contour may be is inwardly directed and be defined by at least a first gradient direction. The display screen is provided with the front face, apart from the portion that has the contour. The keypad includes a plurality of keycaps that extend outward from the front face. The keypad may be provided only on an occupied region of the portion of the front face that has the contour. A maximum angle formed by the occupied region of the front face relative to a horizontal reference that is coplanar with the display screen is greater than 20 degrees.

Accessories are attached to an electronic device, such as an electronic book ('eBook') reader device via one or more low profile accessory connectors configured to provide mechanical and electrical connections. Accessories include covers, reading lights, external power sources, touchpads, diagnostic devices, and so forth. The low profile accessory connector is configured to receive a hook from the accessory and provide a mechanical engagement between the hook and the electronic device. While engaged, at least a portion of the hook engages one or more electrical contacts within the connector. Electrical power, signals, or both may then be sent between the accessory and the electronic device.

A mobile computing device is provided that includes a front housing segment and a back housing segment. The front housing segment includes a first front slot and a first front securement feature or cleat. The back housing segment includes a first back slot and a first securement feature or cleat. The front housing segment and the back housing segment are positioned so that the first back securement feature is received and slideably engaged with the first front slot, and the first front securement feature is received and slideably engaged with the first back cleat. A combination of (i) the first back securement feature being received and slideably engaged with the first front slot, and (ii) the first front securement feature being received and slideably engaged with the first back securement feature, enable the front housing segment and the back housing segment to slide along a path that includes an extended position and a contracted position. As described with one or more embodiments, the path may be arced or otherwise include a radius of curvature.

An apparatus for holding a SIM (subscriber identification module) card for an electronic device. The electronic device is implemented using integrated circuits on a PCB (printed circuit board) contained within a device housing. A SIM connector mounted on the PCB may electrically connect a SIM card to the PCB. The SIM card is releasably held in position by a SIM card door. The SIM card door may engage the SIM card with the SIM connector when in a closed position. The SIM card door in open position may slidably accept the SIM card. The SIM card door is releasably engageable with the housing and is rotatably attached to the housing in order to swing to the closed position from the open position. Holding the SIM card with the SIM card door provides for a smaller SIM connector and thus a minimum amount of PCB area for mounting the SIM connector.

A cover for a device is disclosed. The cover may include a first portion operable to protect a button of a device from inadvertent actuation, wherein the first portion enables viewing of the button while the cover overlaps the device. The cover may also include an opening operable to afford access to an interface component of the device, wherein the opening is operable to enable a user to reach through and physically interact with the interface component while the cover overlaps the device. The cover may further include a second portion enclosing the opening on all sides.

Cover for device

A cover for an electronic device made of a transparent material and having a form factor that protects function buttons of the device from inadvertent actuation. The cover has an opening of a size, shape and location to afford access to an interface device for multi-way navigation with the cover in place. Protrusions in tabs at the sides of the cover snap into cutouts located midway along the side of the electronic device and may be used to hold the cover in place. The cover may be stored on the back of the device while the device is in use. The transparent nature of the cover affords viewing of a display screen with the cover in place.
