A laser cutting apparatus operable in a wellbore to form radial slots in a subterranean formation penetrated by the wellbore and a casing lining at least a portion of the wellbore. The laser cutting apparatus includes a housing, a deflector system, and an optical member. The deflector system is disposed for rotation about a first axis within the housing and is rotatable about a second axis at a distance from the first axis. The optical member conducts a laser beam incident upon the deflector system.

Creating radial slots in a wellbore

An apparatus comprising a downhole tool configured for conveyance within a borehole penetrating a subterranean formation, wherein the downhole tool comprises: a probe assembly configured to seal a region of a wall of the borehole; a perforator configured to penetrate a portion of the sealed region of the borehole wall by projecting through the probe assembly; a fluid chamber comprising a fluid; and a pump configured to inject the fluid from the fluid chamber into the formation through the perforator.

Apparatus and methods for characterizing a reservoir

An apparatus and method for characterizing a subsurface formation is provided. The apparatus includes a tool body, a probe assembly carried by the tool body for sealing off a region of the borehole wall, an actuator for moving the probe assembly between a retracted position for conveyance of the tool body and a deployed position for sealing off a region of the borehole wall and a perforator extending through the probe assembly for penetrating a portion of the sealed-off region of the borehole wall. The tool may be provided with first and second drilling shafts with bits for penetrating various surfaces. The method involves sealing off a region of a wall of an open borehole penetrating the formation, creating a perforation through a portion of the sealed-off region of the borehole wall and testing the formation.

Apparatus and method for characterizing a reservoir

A method and apparatus for reducing debris in a perforation in a wellbore extending from the wellbore into a subterranean formations is provided. A housing is positioned in the wellbore, and an arm is extended therefrom. One or more plugs are positionable in the perforation via the arm. The plug is adapted to block debris from formation fluid flowing into the housing via the perforation whereby the contamination in the formation fluid is reduced. The plug may be a filter positionable in the perforation, or a bit activated to dislodge debris.

Downhole sampling apparatus and method

The present invention relates to a well-bore sensor apparatus and method. The apparatus includes a downhole tool carrying at least one sensor plug for deployment into the sidewall of a well-bore. The apparatus may also be used in conjunction with a surface control unit and a communication link for operatively coupling the sensor plug to the surface control unit. The sensor plug is capable of collecting well-bore data, such as pressure or temperature, and communicating the data uphole via a communication link, such as the downhole tool or an antenna. The downhole data may then be analyzed and control commands sent in response thereto. The sensor plug and/or the downhole tool may be made to respond to such control commands. In some embodiments, multiple surface control units for corresponding wells may be networked for decision making and control across multiple well-bores.

Well-bore sensor apparatus and method

A method for sampling a subsurface formation includes positioning a formation testing tool in a borehole having borehole fluid with a pressure less than formation pressure such that a pressure differential exists between the borehole and the formation. The method also includes establishing fluid communication between the tool and the formation, and inducing flow from the formation into the tool by exposing the tool to the pressure differential. The method further includes capturing a formation fluid sample in a sample tank by directing formation fluid to the sample tank and exposing the sample tank to the pressure differential. A system for sampling a subsurface formation includes a formation testing tool having a probe assembly, a sample tank, and a conduit system. The system also includes wellhead for controlling borehole pressure. The wellhead includes a sealing apparatus, a pressure increasing device, and a flow adjustment device.
