A method of providing cement isolators in an annular space about a tubular string in open hole uses a straddle tool that sequentially engages profiles in the tubular string so that prepositioned communication valves to the surrounding annulus can be straddled to force cement out through the straddle tool and into the annular space. The cement is formulated to stay in position and set up. Each valved opening in the string comes with an associated locating profile and another profile for a locking dog to secure the straddle tool in position for forced delivery from the tool and into the valve assembly for delivery into the open hole annulus where a sealing ring of cement will set up for isolation. The operation sequentially put in place as many barriers as there are valve assemblies to straddle and in a single trip generally working in an uphole direction.

Method of placing cement sealing rings at predetermined annular locations around a tubular string

A sealing device for downhole use, one of which is for casing, when drilling with casing, which allows the casing to be closed off if the bottom hole assembly needs to come out for any reason. In one embodiment, the internal packer is triggered to set in a variety of ways upon removal of the bottom hole assembly. It can be drilled out when the new bottom hole assembly is run in later. In an alternative design, a flapper can be used that is held open for the initial insertion of the bottom hole assembly and is released to spring shut upon removal of the assembly. Multiple flappers or packers or other types of closure devices are envisioned to allow removal of the bottom hole assembly more than once and still retain blowout protection on each removal of the bottom hole assembly. A variety of applications are contemplated some of which are perforation, side tracking, fracturing, and gravel packing, to name a few examples.

Downhole fluid loss control apparatus

Methods and systems for conducting liner drilling and subsequent completion of the drilled section by cementing and anchoring the liner into place. The methods and systems prevent the liner from being cemented in in a bent or corkscrewed configuration. Additionally, there are no exterior components associated with the liner during drilling so as to allow relatively unrestricted return of drilling mud and cuttings.

Latchable hanger assembly and method for liner drilling and completion

A drilling assembly supports a liner for making a wellbore. The BHA comprises a pilot bit and a reamer above it that is larger in diameter than the suspended liner. If the BHA needs to be pulled out, the reamer is brought into contact with the liner and a latch mechanism between the two engages as another latch that had held the reamer bit to the BHA is released. The reamer bit stays with the liner as the BHA is pulled and later reinserted. On the way in the BHA latches to the reamer bit which then unlatches from the liner bottom. Preferably, splines and a shoulder on the BHA are used to drive the reamer bit as opposed to any power being transmitted through the latch between the BHA and the reamer bit. However, the latch mechanism between the BHA and the reamer bit could also provide torque and weight on bit for drilling operations. The process may be repeated.
