A storage system includes a storage grid structure having a top rail grid upon which container handling vehicles work to store and retrieve storage containers in and from storage columns beneath the top rail grid. The storage system includes multiple transfer rails forming a horizontal transfer rail grid arranged at a level below the top rail grid. At least one transport vehicle operates on the transfer rail grid. The storage system includes a picking/stocking station for picking/stocking items between a storage container and a packaging box, and an unloading/loading assembly for unloading/loading packaging boxes containing such items. The transport vehicle is arranged to move upon the transfer rail grid in two perpendicular directions and comprises a carrier platform. The transfer rail grid is arranged to allow access for the transport vehicle to transport one or more packaging boxes at a time between the picking/stocking station and the unloading/loading assembly.

Storage system

An automated grid based storage and retrieval system includes a framework structure including upright members and a grid of horizontal rails provided at upper ends of the upright members. The framework structure defines at least one storage volume below the horizontal rails. The at least one storage volume is open against the horizontal rails such that storage container vehicles may lower and raise storage containers into and out of the storage volume. The at least one storage volume includes a plurality of storage columns arranged adjacent one another, a plurality of walls surrounding the at least one storage volume; a void extending beneath the storage columns; and a cooler system adapted to draw air from the void, cool the air, and release the cooled air into an air release area arranged below the horizontal rails. The cooler system is arranged within an cooler enclosure arranged inside the plurality of walls and adjacent the plurality of storage columns. The cooler enclosure includes at least one opening from the void for the cooler system to draw air from the void, and a conduit for releasing the cooled air in the air release area.

System and method of temperature control in an automated grid based storage and retrieval system

A method and computer program product controls the transferring of a storage container for storing items by transferring the storage container via access station at an interaction area among a plurality of interaction areas of an automated storage and retrieval system. The storage container is linked to a user and items stored. The method performed by the computer program product includes specific modules performing different steps of the method. The modules include a user identification module processing user identification data and giving access to the system, a registration module registering items to be stored in an inventory database, a search module for searching for stored items in the inventory database, a presentation module presenting search results and items stored, and an execution module generating instructions that via a communication module is instructing a system controller of the automated storage and retrieval system to retrieve or store a specific storage container.

Method and computer program for controlling storage and retrieval of personal storage containers in an automated storage and retrieval system

A storage network includes a plurality of storage systems. Each storage system includes a storage grid structure, having at least one transfer column and a horizontal top rail grid upon which the container handling vehicle moves in two perpendicular directions, and at least one container handling vehicle. The storage system includes at least one container transfer vehicle and transfer rails forming a transfer rail grid upon which the container transfer vehicle moves in at least one horizontal direction. The container transfer vehicle includes a container carrier for carrying a storage container and a wheel arrangement for moving the container transfer vehicle in two perpendicular directions upon the transfer rail grid. The at least one transfer column extends from the top rail grid to the transfer section, such that a storage container may be transferred between the top rail grid and the container carrier of the container transfer vehicle.

An automated storage and retrieval system includes a rail system for guiding a plurality of container handling vehicles. The rail system includes a first set of parallel rails arranged in a horizontal plane and extending in a first direction, and a second set of parallel rails arranged in the horizontal plane and extending in a second direction, which is orthogonal to the first direction. The first and second sets of rails form a grid pattern in the horizontal plane including a plurality of adjacent grid cells. Each grid cell includes a grid opening defined by a pair of neighboring rails of the first set of rails and a pair of neighboring rails of the second set of rails. The automated storage and retrieval system includes a storage volume beneath the rail system. The storage volume includes storage columns for storing storage containers and the container handling vehicles are operable to retrieve a storage container from a stack of storage containers within the storage volume. A method of providing an operator access to a target storage position in the automated storage and retrieval system includes operating a master control system to allocate and instruct at least one container handling vehicle to remove storage containers along a first path between a position at a side edge or a top surface of the storage volume and the target storage position such that an operator can access the target storage position through the first path when the at least one container handling vehicle has removed the storage containers along the first path.

Method, and associated system, of providing an operator access to a target storage position in an automated storage and retrieval system

A remotely operated vehicle includes an arrangement to provide a pre-alert and tracking of a position of the vehicle following a travelling route relative to tracks laid out on rails in x-, y-directions on a rail system. The vehicle has first and seconds sets of wheels connected to drives for moving the vehicle in corresponding x-, y-directions on the rail system. The arrangement includes at least one sensor module provided with at least four sensors. A first sensor is directed vertically downwards to detect the rails in the x-direction on the sensor module. A second sensor is directed vertically downwards to detect the rails in the y-direction on the sensor module. A third sensor is positioned on the sensor module to detect a corner of an intersection between the rails in the x-direction and y-direction. A fourth sensor is configured to detect a remaining distance to the arrival of the vehicle at a set position, by detecting the rails in the x direction when travelling in the y direction, and detecting the rail in the y direction when travelling in the x direction. The fourth sensor is placed at a predefined position on the sensor module. A controller is provided on the vehicle to receive the output from at least one of the sensors and to pre-alert the remaining distance of the arrival of the vehicle at the position.

Remotely operated vehicle with an arrangement to provide a pre-alert and tracking of a position of the vehicle

A method controls the operation of container handling vehicles and remotely operated specialized container handling vehicles. A specified storage container is to be transferred from a storage column and its corresponding grid cell to a specialized container handling vehicle. The method includes determining, by an operational controller, which container handling vehicle shall be assigned for the job; sending instructions to a first controller in the selected container handling vehicle instructing the selected container handling vehicle to pick up the storage container from the grid cell and to lower the storage container to a selected port; assigning a specific specialized container handling vehicle of the remotely operated specialized container handling vehicles to retrieve the specified storage container from the port; and transmitting instructions from the operational controller to a second controller in the specific specialized container handling vehicle to retrieve the specified storage container at the selected port. The specific specialized container handling vehicle is selected based on minimizing the total elapsed time for transferring the storage container between the selected container handling vehicle and the specific specialized container handling vehicle.

Method and system for controlling the operation of container handling vehicles and drones serving an automated storage and retrieval system

A container handling vehicle for lifting a storage container from an underlying framework structure includes a container lifting assembly for lifting the storage container and a vehicle body. The container lifting assembly includes a lifting frame for releasable connection to a storage container, a lifting shaft assembly, and a plurality of lifting bands. The lifting bands are connected to the lifting frame and the lifting shaft assembly such that the lifting frame may be raised or lowered by operating the lifting shaft assembly. The vehicle body includes a sidewall and a cantilevered section from which the lifting frame depends. The cantilevered section extends laterally from an upper end of the sidewall. The container lifting assembly features a lifting frame guide assembly comprising a first guide device and a cooperating second guide device. The first guide device is provided on the lifting frame. The second guide device is slidably connected to the sidewall via at least one vertically extending rail, such that the second guide device can move in a vertical direction relative to the sidewall. The first guide device and the second guide device are arranged to interact with each other when the lifting frame is adjacent the sidewall, such that horizontal movement of the lifting frame relative to the vehicle body is restricted.

Container handling vehicle

A container-handling vehicle includes a lifting shaft having first and second end sections, a motor for rotating the lifting shaft, a lifting frame for releasably connecting to a storage container, and a first pair of lifting bands and a second pair of lifting bands connecting the lifting shaft to the lifting frame. Each lifting band has a first end connected to the lifting shaft and a second end connected to the lifting frame. Each pair of lifting bands has a first lifting band connected at the first end section of the lifting shaft and a second lifting band connected at the second end section of the lifting shaft. The first pair of lifting bands extends in a substantially horizontal direction from the lifting shaft towards a band guiding assembly arranged to change the direction of the first pair of lifting bands to extend in a vertical direction. The second pair of lifting bands extends in a vertical direction from the lifting shaft at the side of the lifting shaft facing away from the band guiding assembly.

Container-handling vehicle

An automated storage and retrieval system includes a rail system, a master control system, and a plurality of remotely operated vehicles. The rail system includes a first and second set of parallel tracks arranged orthogonally in a horizontal plane. The master control system is configured to keep track of any remotely operated vehicle operating on the rail system. The plurality of remotely operated vehicles handling storage containers, which operate on the rail system, each include first and second sets of wheels for transport on the rail system, and a fire detection device configured to transmit data from the fire detection device to the master control system. The master control system includes a processing device for processing the data from the fire detection devices so as to create a heat map of the automated storage and retrieval system.

Automated storage and retrieval system with fire detection device and methods of locating and/or verifying fire or smoke in an automated storage and retrieval system

A rescue system for retrieving a malfunctioning vehicle from a rail system of an automated storage and retrieval system includes a first rescue vehicle and a second rescue vehicle. The rail system includes a plurality of rails with tracks extending in an X-direction and a plurality of rails with tracks extending in a Y-direction perpendicular to the X-direction, and a plurality of remotely operated vehicles configured to move in the X and Y-directions on the tracks of the rail system. The first rescue vehicle is configured to run on the tracks of the rail system. The first rescue vehicle is provided with a lifting device on one side of the vehicle, which faces for engagement in a first X-direction. The second rescue vehicle is configured to run on the tracks of the rail system. The second rescue vehicle is provided with a lifting device on an opposite side of the vehicle, which faces for engagement in a second X-direction opposite to the first X-direction. The first and second rescue vehicles are configured to work in tandem so that when one of the plurality of remotely operated vehicles malfunctions, the first and second rescue vehicles can position themselves on the rail system on opposite sides of the malfunctioning vehicle to engage their respective lifting devices with the opposite sides of the malfunctioning vehicle. The first and second rescue vehicles operate their lifting devices simultaneously so as to lift the malfunctioning vehicle off the rail system and transport the malfunctioning vehicle.

Rescue system and methods for retrieving a malfunctioning vehicle from a rail system

A storage facility includes a storage space enclosing a storage and retrieval system, a transit space, and a first separation wall. The storage and retrieval system includes a storage grid configured to store a plurality of storage containers in vertical stacks, a first upper vehicle support extending in an upper horizontal plane above the storage grid, and a container handling vehicle configured to transport at least one of the plurality of storage containers on a wheel arrangement between at least two locations on the first upper vehicle support. The transit space includes a second upper vehicle support extending in the upper horizontal plane and arranged relative to the first upper vehicle support such that the container handling vehicle may move between the storage space and the transit space. The first separation wall separating the storage space and transit space. The first separation wall includes a first upper opening having a minimum size and vertical position allowing the container handling vehicle to pass through, and a first upper closable gate configured to open and close the first opening.

Gas isolated storage system

An automated storage and retrieval system includes an automated storage and retrieval grid and a delivery system. The automated storage and retrieval grid includes a container handling vehicle rail system and a delivery column. The container handling vehicle rail system, which is for guiding a plurality of container handling vehicles, includes a first set of parallel rails arranged in a horizontal plane and extending in a first direction, and a second set of parallel rails arranged in the horizontal plane and extending in a second direction which is orthogonal to the first direction, which first and second sets of rails form a grid pattern in the horizontal plane including a plurality of adjacent container handling vehicle grid cells. Each container handling vehicle grid cell includes a container handling vehicle grid opening defined by a pair of neighboring rails of the first set of rails and a pair of neighboring rails of the second set of rails. The delivery column is adapted for transport of a storage container arranged in a stack of storage containers beneath the container handling vehicle rail system between a container handling vehicle and a delivery port situated at a lower end of the delivery column. The delivery system includes a remotely operated delivery vehicle. The remotely operated delivery vehicle includes a vehicle body, rolling devices connected to the vehicle body, rolling device motors for driving the rolling devices in a horizontal plane, and a power source connected to the rolling device motors. A container carrier is adapted to support the storage container. The delivery vehicle is further adapted to transport the storage container between a delivery port and a second location for handling of the storage container by at least one of a robotic operator and a human operator.

Automated storage and retrieval system and a method of transporting storage containers between an automated storage and retrieval grid and a second location

A storage tower for storing storage containers includes a vertically extending supporting structure having a vertical axis, and m horizontally oriented container supports arranged along the vertical axis of the supporting structure and supported by container supporting frameworks to provide different levels where storage containers can be stored. The container supports are distributed at vertical intervals and m is a positive integer of 2 or more. Each container support is rotationally connected to the support structure and configured to support at least one storage container. Each level of the l container supports that are arranged above the remaining levels of m−l container supports each displays at least one opening having a size being at least a maximum horizontal cross section of the storage containers to be stored, l being a positive integer of 1 to m−1. The l container supports can be rotated about the vertical axis independently such that at least one opening of each level of the l container supports is vertically alignable with at least one opening of the other levels of the l container supports by individual rotation of the container supports.

Automated storage tower with carousel

A remotely operated delivery vehicle transports a storage container between a location directly below an automated storage and retrieval grid configured to store a plurality of stacks of storage containers, and a second location for handling of the storage container by at least one of a robotic operator and a human operator. The remotely operated delivery vehicle may include a rolling devices configured to move the remotely operated delivery vehicle in a horizontal plane along tracks of a delivery rail system. Additionally, rolling device motors are provided for driving the rolling devices. A power source provides propulsion power to the rolling device motors. A container carrier receives the storage container from above and onto or at least partly into the container carrier so that contents of the storage container are accessible by the at least one of the robotic operator and the human operator.
