The present invention concerns a method for biological treatment of carbon, nitrogen and optionally phosphorus in water, in a reactor system () comprising a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) () and a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) (). The method comprises a step () of filling said SBR reactor () with water to be treated (), a step () of anoxic/aerobic biological treatment in said reactor system () and a step () of discharging treated water () from said SBR reactor (). The anoxic/aerobic biological treatment step () comprises: a biological treatment () under largely anoxic conditions in the SBR reactor (), producing a first effluent (), a biological treatment () under aerobic conditions in the MBBR reactor (), producing a second effluent (), and a continuous recirculation of the first and second effluents.
