A preferably sealed lead-acid battery having a microfine glass separator pasting paper integrated with its adjoining plate, and the associated method by which the separator pasting paper is applied directly to the freshly pasted plate.

Sealed lead-acid cell and method

Electrochemical cell or battery housing modules are joined together to form an integral vibration-resistant multi-unit battery through adherence together of corresponding ribs formed on the outer walls of the modules.

Vibration-resistant battery assembly

A through-the-wall intercell connection for adjacent cells of a battery in which integral extensions of the current collector tabs emanating from the respective plates are directly welded together at the partition opening. The individual tabs are bent along a smooth curve which, together with interposed cushioned insulating material between bent tabs, lends vibration resistance to the intercell connection.

Through-the-partition intercell connection and method

A method for shifting a transmission with a predominantly mechanical speed sensing actuator to within a 10 percent shifting zone around a chosen operating line on an engine rpm/torque map by matching the force balance of the driver pulley to a force balance on the driven pulley. A variable speed belt drive transmission system with a predominantly mechanical speed sensing driver pulley and a torque sensing driven pulley that responds to an operating line, monotonic in torque having a slope from about 0.004 lb-ft/rpm to about 0.060 lb-ft/rpm where the driver pulley has an actuator that controls speed for a chosen torque value. The actuator has at least one centrifugal weight connected to an end of a torque producing spring to wind the spring. A second end of the spring is operatively connected through an articulated linkage to a movable half of the pulley such that the generated axial force is not directly proportional to square of the speed.

Variable speed, belt driven transmission system, speed sensing driver

Thermoplastic battery cover and container piece parts are fused together using vibratory energy, particularly ultrasonic welding, in which the horn has a depending skirt extending along an outer wall of the container and which serves to maintain the cover and container in mutual alignment and simultaneously contain the flow of the melt (flash). In another aspect, a particular interference joint between the components is described featuring a continuous ramp of 50-70 degrees and producing an interference fit for an improved weld. The invention is also directed to a cell or battery formed according to the method of the invention, as well as the horn.

Vibratory welding of battery components

A mandrel useful in the spiral winding of flexible strip members is described including a pair of juxtaposed curvilinear perimetric driving portions which are offset laterally relative to one another and which have a slot or slots for receiving the elements to be wound. A process and winder are also described for the spiral winding of the strip members into a coiled element, e.g., a coiled capacitor or spirally wound battery cell pack.
