A system and method for adaptively managing frame size in a wireless multihop network is disclosed. In one embodiment, a packet is transmitted from a source to a destination. A acknowledgement packet is received and a successful acknowledgement packet counter is incremented if the acknowledgement packet arrives prior to a time-out of a timer. A frame size is increased if the successful acknowledgement packet counter reaches a specified value. If the acknowledgement packet arrives after the time-out of the timer, the successful acknowledgement packet counter is reset and the frame size is decreased. These procedures can be repeated until the frame size is greater than or equal to a maximum frame size or less than or equal to a minimum frame size.

The NAG is an anchor point for mobile nodes in the WAWLAN and maintains a fixed source of information about each mobile node regardless of their mobility. The invention provides various schemes for negotiating communications between wireless mesh network nodes operating in accordance with the IEEE 802.11e standard. However, more generally, the invention can be operated in accordance with other communication standards. According to a broad embodiment of the invention, a method is provided in which meeting durations are divided into at least two portions, an uplink transmission portion and a downlink transmission portion. In order to protect the negotiation packets from collisions, the negotiation process is combined with the uplink and downlink data transmissions. In some aspects of the invention, the negotiation process is protected from collisions by using the transmission opportunity (TXOP) protocol that is available in the IEEE 802.11e standard. The inventive methods can be used with a contention based protocol or a contention free based protocol. According to another broad embodiment of the invention there is provided a wireless network node capable of implementing methods described for negotiating communications between neighbouring nodes.

Systems and methods for wireless network negotiation

A communications network performs a variety of maintenance actions. One of those actions is rerouting of a connection path. A feature called &ldquo;dynamic resource management option&rdquo; allows the network or the called party of an active connection to initiate a resource change procedure when needs arises. The resource change can also be achieved by rerouting the existing path of the active connection. However a maintenance action taken in one network domain is only effected within the same domain, because a different domain may have different maintenance procedures. Telecommunication connections often span more than one domain and a request for resource adjustment must be considered differently for a proper maintenance action. A resource change indication message includes a flag to indicate the message originated within or outside the domain. By observing the flag, it is possible to decide on a proper maintenance procedure.
