A hot gas injection lance () for injecting hot gas into a vessel () is made of three modules (A,B andC) which all fabricated separately and brought together in successive steps and connected together by releasable fastenings. Lance module (A) is a main duct module providing an elongate duct () through which to direct hot gas into an upper region of the vessel. Lance module (B) is a gas inlet module through which to direct hot gas into duct () of module (A). Lance module (C) is a central module which includes an elongate central tubular structure () that extends within the gas flow duct () and carries at its lower end a series of swirl imparting tubular structure () that extends within the gas flow duct () and carries at its lower end a series of swirl imparting vanes () for imparting swirl to the gas flow exiting the duct. Main duct module (A) has a mounting flange () that abuts a flange () on vessel () and the flanges () are fastened together by bolts (). Gas inlet module has a lower mounting flangewhich abuts a flange () at the upper end of module (A) and the flanges () are connected together by bolts (). Central module (C) has a mounting flange () that abuts a flange () at the upper end of inlet module (B) and the flanges () are fastened together by bolts ().

Gas injection lance

Solids injection lances for injecting solids into a metallurgical vessel are normally supplied with cooling water from a cooling water circuit through water supply lines and return lines. Supply lines are provided with spaced pairs of connectors and bypass valves, and return lines are provided with similar pairs of spaced connectors and bypass valves. Flexible hoses can be connected between the pairs of connectors to establish supply and return flows of cooling water which bypass segments of the main supply and return lines which can be isolated and removed to allow withdrawal and subsequent replacement of the lances.

Lance extraction

A metallurgical lance () to extend through an opening in the wall of a smelting vessel barrel () and into the interior space of the vessel. Lance () includes a central core tube () through which to pass solid particulate material into the vessel and an annular cooling jacket () surrounding the central core tube () throughout a substantial part of its length. Lance () has a mounting structure () comprising an outer annular part () extended about cooling jacket () and about twice the diameter of the cooling jacket. The outer annular part () fits within a tubular lance mounting bracket () welded to the shell () of vessel barrel () to extend outwardly from the vessel. The lance is held within mounting bracket () by clamping bolts acting between flanges () on the outer annular part () and mounting bracket (). The outer annular part () is double walled and the interior space between its walls is divided into water flow passages through which cooling water flows from a water inlet () to an outlet ().

Apparatus for injecting solid particulate material into a vessel

A smelting apparatus includes a vessel and a solids injection lance extending through an opening in the wall of a vessel barrel into the interior space of the vessel. The lance includes a central core tube through which to pass solid particulate material into the vessel and an annular cooling jacket surrounding the central core tube throughout a substantial part of its length. The lance has a mounting structure including a tubular part extended about the cooling jacket and about twice the diameter of the cooling jacket. The tubular part fits within a tubular lance mounting bracket welded to the shell of the vessel barrel to extend outwardly from the vessel. The lance is held within the mounting bracket by clamping bolts acting between flanges on the tubular part and the tubular bracket.

An apparatus for injecting gas into a vessel includes a gas flow duct which receives hot gas through a gas inlet structure at a rear end of the duct. The forward end of the duct has an annular duct with an internal cooling water passage. Cooling water supply and return passages are formed within the wall of the duct such that water flows to and from a tip through the supply and return passages. The tip includes a hollow shell and a partitioning structure that has a ring and a plurality of circumferential flanges that project outwardly from the ring to the shell to form a series of water flow galleries, each extending circumferentially around the tip and interconnected for flow of cooling water sequentially through the galleries from the water supply passages to the water return passage. The circumferential flanges also serve as buttress supports for the shell.
