An interoperative light therapy apparatus and method are disclosed. The apparatus includes an excitation light source, a plurality of light emitting devices and a plurality of light detecting fibers, wherein the plurality of light emitting devices produce a fluorescence light in cancerous cells of a patient treated with a photosensitizing medication. The fluorescence light is collected by the plurality of detector fibers and a digital spatial image of the cancerous cells is produced. The digital spatial image is useful for targeting the cancerous cells in a subsequent resection procedure. An interoperative light therapy apparatus is disclosed that further include a therapy light source that can deliver therapy light to the cancerous cells using the digital spatial image in the subsequent resection procedure.

In some implementations, a PDT delivery device is disclosed that may include a housing including a handle, a fiber lock orifice, a probe insertion orifice and a tube retraction groove positioned between the fiber lock orifice and the probe insertion orifice. In addition, the PDT delivery device may include an insertion probe having a stepped hollow cylinder positioned within the probe insertion orifice and within the tube retraction groove and having an insertion needle at a distal end. The PDT delivery device may include a fiber locking mechanism and a probe release mechanism selectively movable between an unlock position and a lock position. Also, the PDT delivery device may include a probe retraction mechanism releasably coupled to the insertion probe. Further, the PDT delivery device may include a retraction trigger coupled to the probe retraction mechanism to translate the insertion probe between an insertion position and a retraction position.

A photodynamic therapy (PDT) apparatus and method are disclosed. The PDT apparatus includes a light flap that includes a plurality of light emitting devices wherein each of the light emitting devices has a plurality of operating states. The plurality of operating states are used to train a neural network model capable of producing a treatment irradiance profile. The method includes using an image of an area of interest for targeted treatment of PDT wherein the image is used an input to the trained neural network model. The neural network model produces a plurality of optimized feature states and the apparatus in turn produces a treatment irradiance profile closely matching the area of interest.

A photodynamic therapy (PDT) apparatus and method are disclosed. The PDT apparatus can include a flexible optical applicator that includes a plurality of light emitting devices for producing an irradiance pattern of therapy light to a target area of a patient. The PDT system includes an optical light controller that includes a computer processor. The method disclosed includes determining a treatment plan based on a plurality of therapy light parameters, photosensitizing drug selection, patient specific parameters, optimized light interval and other relevant parameters. The method further includes monitoring the application of the therapy light against the treatment plan and determining an updated treat plan in the event of a deviation from an initial treatment plan.

A therapeutic light delivery apparatus and method are disclosed. The apparatus includes a light source and an integrated optical applicator. The integrated optical applicator includes a plurality of light emitting devices and detector fibers fixedly spatially positioned within a flexible matrix material. The light emitting devices can be positioned a predetermined distance from an application side of the integrated optical applicator comprising an accurate and repeatable standoff position. A flexible matrix material is disclosed having a high scattering coefficient to produce a uniform irradiance pattern and predetermined fluence. A method of performing a photodynamic therapy procedure is disclosed that includes providing an integrated optical applicator couple to a therapy light source, providing a photosensitizing drug to a tissue of a patient, positioning an application side of the integrated optical applicator against a target area of the tissue, delivering a therapy light to the target area, and producing an irradiance pattern.

Techniques and systems suitable for performing low-loss fusion splicing of optical waveguide sections are provided. According to some embodiments, multiple laser beams (from one or more laser) may be utilized to uniformly heat a splice region including portions of the optical waveguide sections to be spliced, which may have different cross-sectional dimensions. According to some embodiments, the relative distance of the optical waveguide sections and/or the power of the multiple laser beams may be varied during splicing operations.

A sensing cable includes a pair of sensing fibers that are connected to one another by a U-shaped turnaround section. The turnaround section is a section of sensing fiber coated with a jacket that includes metallic components. The turnaround section is bent and, then, annealed according to a method of the present invention. The turnaround section is robust and reduced in size (i.e., radius). The sensing cable also includes an inner sleeve that surrounds the sensing fibers and an elongated outer armor casing (i.e., including an armor tube and a sealing cap) that encases a terminating end thereof. The armor tube and the sealing cap protect the sensing fiber from mechanical and chemical harm, are reduced in size and facilitate insertion of the sensing cable into downhole environments. The sensing cable has improved operating range up to 300&#xb0; C.

Methods and apparatus enable monitoring conditions in a well-bore using multiple cane-based sensors. The apparatus includes an array of cane-based Bragg grating sensors located in a single conduit for use in the well-bore. For some embodiments, each sensor is located at a different linear location along the conduit allowing for increased monitoring locations along the conduit.

A distributed thermal sensing (DTS) interrogator is connected to the sensing cable and performs DTS measuring according to protocols and algorithms that leverage the modal filter of the turnaround section to calculate temperature readings along the sensing fiber assembly.
