A surgical system for determining breakthrough depth of a bore in a bone passing through a proximal cortical layer of bone and a distal cortical layer of bone. The surgical system includes an instrument for coupling to a cutting tool. A sensor is coupled to the instrument to generate one or more depth measurements of the cutting tool as the cutting tool cuts through the bone. The breakthrough depth is determined based on depth measurements made after the cutting tool passes through the proximal cortical layer of bone. The breakthrough depth is optionally based on a type of bone being cut, bone hardness, and cutting tool selection.

Surgical systems and methods for determining breakthrough depth of cutting tools

A surgical handpiece system capable of determining a suitable screw length for bone fixation with a bone plate that compensates an initial screw length value based on orientation of the surgical handpiece system during a drilling process. The surgical handpiece system comprising a surgical handpiece including a depth measurement extension and a sensor. The depth measurement extension may be configured to determine a thickness of bone when a drill bit is attached and used to drill through the bone. The sensor may be configured to generate an orientation signal responsive to orientation of the depth measurement extension. The surgical handpiece system also comprises a processor in communication with the sensor and configured to determine the suitable screw length for bone fixation based the sensor.

A protective apparel system comprising a surgical helmet including a peripheral device and a surgical garment configured to be disposed over the helmet. The garment comprises a fabric and a face shield defining a sterile barrier between the wearer and the environment. At least one of a coupling member or housing may disposed on the face shield, the coupling member configured for removably couple the peripheral device to the face shield to orient the peripheral device relative to the face shield when the surgical garment is disposed over the surgical helmet. The housing may removably couple a lens assembly to the face shield.

A surgical handpiece assembly for operating a bit having resilient arms to engage the handpiece assembly. The handpiece assembly includes a housing assembly. A drive cannula is coupled to the housing assembly and receives torque from a motor. The drive cannula extends along an axis. The drive cannula has an internal surface defining a bore that extends along the axis. The bore receives the bit. The internal surface has a driving portion to transmit torque to the bit. A retention surface near an end of the drive cannula assists the resilient arms of the bit to retain a position of the bit relative to the drive cannula. A release assembly proximal the drive cannula includes a release member moveable relative to the retention surface to disengage the resilient arms from engagement with the retention surface to permit the bit to move relative to the drive cannula.

A surgical handpiece system for use with a drill bit having an identification feature that includes magnetic material. A handpiece transfers torque to the drill bit to rotate the drill bit. A measurement module that includes a housing is coupled to the handpiece. A measurement cannula made of a non-magnetic material surrounds the drill bit during operation. The measurement cannula extends forward or rearward relative to the housing and has a distal end adapted for placement against a workpiece. A transducer assembly generates a transducer signal based on a position of the measurement cannula relative to the housing. A sensor generates an identification signal responsive to a magnetic field or magnetoresistance of the identification feature of the drill bit through the measurement cannula during operation. A controller receives the identification signal and identifies the coupled drill bit corresponding to the received identification signal.

A protective apparel system for use with a surgical helmet having a headlamp and including a protective apparel apparatus comprising a surgical garment, wherein the garment defines a sterile barrier between the wearer and the environment. The system includes a lens assembly adjacent to the surgical garment on the environment side and configured to cooperate with a coupling member for use with the headlamp. The lens assembly may include a control member and a lens, wherein the control member is be manipulatable by a wearer. The control member may be configured wherein manipulation by the wearer may reposition the lens of the lens assembly to adjust the direction and/or intensity of the light from the headlamp without breaching the sterile barrier.

A drill bit comprises a shank extending along an axis and an interface comprising at least one outermost drive portion spaced at a first interface distance from the axis. The drill bit further comprises a resilient arm extending from a proximal end of the shank. The resilient arm comprises an outer arm surface facing away from the axis and a retention surface facing toward a distal end of the shank. The retention surface may be radially aligned about the axis with respect to the outermost drive portion. The resilient arm is movable between: a first position where the outer arm surface is spaced from the axis at a first arm distance greater than the first interface distance, and a second position where the outer arm surface is spaced from the axis at a second arm distance less than or equal to the first interface distance.

A method of securing a portable electronic device with a touchscreen interface for use in a sterile environment comprises providing a sterilizable enclosure and providing a transfer device. The transfer device has an upper wall and a lower wall defining a passage. The enclosure provides a frame and a base movable between open and closed positions. The enclosure is held open with the transfer device. The electronic device is inserted through the passage and into the enclosure. One of the transfer device and the enclosure is moved away from the other.
