A multi-speed, power-driven tool may include a transmission mechanism that transmits power from a motor to an output device. A speed selection mechanism may be coupled to the transmission mechanism, to control a speed reduction through the transmission mechanism, and an output speed of the tool. The transmission mechanism may employ a compound, stepped, planetary gear assembly, to provide for an axially compact arrangement of transmission mechanism components, to reduce an axial length of the tool. The speed selection mechanism may employ a multi-staged grounding device, corresponding to the reduced axial length of the transmission mechanism.

A power tool chuck includes a body with a central bore extending along an axis and configured to receive a tool bit, a plurality of angled passageways, and a plurality of jaws received in the passageways and moveable between an axially forward and radially inward clamping position and an axially rearward and radially outward retracted position. At least one jaw has a rear end lying in a first plane transverse to the axis. A first key drive member coupled to a tail portion of the body is configured to be engaged by a second key drive member on a power tool output shaft to non-rotationally couple the body to the output shaft. The first key drive has a forward end lying in a second plane transverse to the axis. The second plane is axially forward of the first plane when the jaws are in the retracted position.

The sound damping member can reduce sound and/or vibration from static or dynamic parts of a power tool. The sound damping member can reduce noise and/or vibration from one or more rotating or moving parts of a power tool and its housing or internal structure. Methods, means, controls, systems and practices for reducing or eliminating undesired sound from a power tool are disclosed.

A power tool that includes a housing, a trigger switch that is mounted to the housing, a tool output member and a motor and transmission assembly. The housing defines a handle. The motor and transmission assembly is coupled to the housing and is configured to drive the tool output member. The motor and transmission assembly include a motor, which is electrically coupled to the trigger switch, and a transmission having a transmission input member, which is drivingly coupled to the motor, and a transmission output member that is drivingly coupled to the tool output member. The motor and transmission are packaged in the housing in a manner that is extremely compact.
