There is provided a method, apparatus and system for calibrating and operating an optical wavemeter. In calibration, training optical signals with known wavelengths are input to a wavemeter, and corresponding photodetector measurements are obtained. Optical parameters of the wavemeter are then estimated based on the measurements. The optical parameters are indicative of a length difference ΔL between two unequal-length waveguides in an optical delay line of the wavemeter; and scattering parameters of a multi-mode interferometer (MMI) coupler of the wavemeter. The estimation process involves a (e.g. golden-section) search to determine one or more output values for at least one of the optical parameters, based on an objective function which indicates a difference expected and actual measurements. The expected measurements are generated based on a numerical model incorporating candidate values for the optical parameters.

Method and apparatus for operating optical wavemeter and wavemeter comprising same

An optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) including a drift compensation circuit is provided. The OEO includes a set of optical domain components communicatively coupled with a set of RF domain components. The RF domain components include a mode selection filter, a phase locked loop (PLL) and a drift compensation circuit communicatively coupled between the mode selection filter and the PLL. The mode selection filter provides a mode selection result to the drift compensation circuit. The drift compensation circuit phase modulates the mode selection result in a vector based coordinate system to maintain a drift compensated mode selection result within a locking bandwidth of the PLL, and to minimize phase shifting from accumulating phase drift. The PLL detects a phase difference between the drift compensated mode selection result and a reference signal, for use in maintaining the PLL in a phase lock with the reference signal, in particular over wide operational temperature ranges.

High stability optoelectronic oscillator and method

The invention described herein pertains to the structure and formation of dual core waveguide structures and to the formation of optical devices including spot size converters from these dual core waveguide structure for the receiving and routing of optical signals on substrates, interposers, and sub-mount assemblies.

Dual core waveguide

An optical performance monitor comprises a first stage configured to receive a multiplexed optical signal. The first stage is tunable over a period. The first stage periodically filters the multiplexed optical signal over an optical channel to produce a fine filtered optical signal. A second stage is coupled to the first stage and has a second-stage transfer function. The second stage receives the fine filtered optical signal and produces one or a plurality of interfered optical signal pairs. A third stage is coupled to the second stage and has a third-stage transfer function. The third stage receives the optical signal pairs and demultiplexes the optical signal pairs to produce a plurality of demultiplexed optical signals. The combination of the second-stage transfer function and the third-stage transfer function is flatter over the optical channel than the third-stage transfer function.

Optical performance monitor

An innovative micro-size photonic switch is presented. The photonic switch is comprised of: a mirror having a reflecting surface; an input waveguide; and an output tapered waveguide structure. The photonic switch further includes a switching mechanism disposed adjacent to the reflecting surface and operable to change the refractive index along the reflective surface and thereby shift the angle at which the optical signal reflects from the mirror. More specifically, the switching mechanism may operate to change concentration of free carrier distribution along the reflective surface and thereby displace the effective reflecting interface of the mirror. In this way, the optical signal can be directed to one of two or more output ports of the output tapered waveguide structure and finally exited by one output waveguide channel that is connected to the selected port of the output tapered waveguide structure.

Micro-size optical switch on silicon-on-insulator platform

A switching node is disclosed for the routing of packetized data employing a multi-stage packet based routing fabric combined with a plurality of memory switches employing memory queues. The switching node allowing reduced throughput delays, dynamic provisioning of bandwidth and packet prioritization.

Compact load balanced switching structures for packet based communication networks

A packet switch having plural input sectors and output sectors, each input sector being arranged to hold at least one queue per output sector, each output sector having plural output ports and being arranged to hold at least one queue per output port wherein the input sectors are connected to the output sectors via links configured to afford speed-up of data transfer, wherein the links comprise a set of links, and wherein the switch has means for cyclically connecting different subsets of the set of links between the input sectors and the output sectors, and means responsive to statistical variations in traffic applied to input ports of said input sectors to vary the set of links.
