A method for wetting and/or conditioning soil comprises applying a soil treatment composition containing hydrolysed protein to the soil. The soil treatment composition preferably contains a surfactant selected from ethylene oxide-propylene oxide (EO/PO) block copolymer and/or an alkyl polyglycoside. The soil treatment composition may also contain an additional alkoxylate surfactant.

Soil treatment

A method for wetting and/or conditioning soil comprises applying a soil treatment composition containing hydrolyzed protein to the soil. The soil treatment composition preferably contains a surfactant selected from ethylene oxide-propylene oxide (EO/PO) block copolymer and/or an alkyl polyglycoside. The soil treatment composition may also contain an additional alkoxylate surfactant.

An agrochemical formulation comprising a penetrant and an agrochemical active. The penetrant is an esterified and/or etherified polyol alkoxylate obtainable by directly esterifying and/or etherifying a polyol alkoxylate. There is also provided a method of making the penetrant comprising alkoxylation of a polyol, and esterification or etherification of the formed poyol alkoxylate. The penetrant is suitable for use in agrochemical formulations to enhance penetration of the active across a leaf cuticle.

Penetrants for agrochemical formulations

A compound of the formula R.[(AO).&#x2014;R](I) where: Ris the residue of a group having at least m active hydrogen atoms; AO is an alkylene oxide residue; each n is independently from 1 to 100; m is at least 2; and each Ris independently H, a Cto Chydrocarbyl, or an acyl group &#x2014;OC.R, where Ris a Cto Chydrocarbyl group, wherein on average greater than one of the Rgroups is or comprises a Cto Chydrocarbyl group comprising at least two ethylenic double bonds. The compounds are particularly suitable for use in preparing aqueous emulsions or dispersions of resins and polymers, especially alkyd resins.

Surfactant

Hard surfaces can be treated to improve soil resistance, particularly resistance to oily soils, by applying a composition of a quaternised, polyamine, polypropoxylate, polyethoxylate. The polyamine can be a polyethyleneimme, desirably having a molecular weight of from 10 to 50 kDa. The average length of the polypropylenoxy chains is desirably from 10 to 100 and the polyethylenoxy chains from 5 to 50 (each per NH group in the polyamine), particularly at a molar ratio of PO:EO of about 3:1. The degree of quaternization of the nitrogen atoms in the polyamine is desirably from 70 to 100%. The polymer will usually be used in solution in water or an aqueous formulation, which may include detergent and other detergent formulation components.

Treatment of hard surfaces

Surfactant compounds which include an amine ended polyalkylene glycol hydrophile linked to Cto Cmainly hydrocarbyl, particularly composite hydrocarbyl, especially derived from a polymerised fatty acid and/or an aralkyl substituted phenol, hydrophobe, are useful in dispersing solids, particularly active agrochemicals, in aqueous media, or as adjuvants in agrochemical formulations, particularly of water soluble non-selective herbicides. In particular the hydrophobe is derived from polymerised fatty acids, such as dimer and, especially, trimer acids or from aralkyl substituted phenols. Aqueous dispersions using such surfactants can remain stable even with substantial concentrations of electrolyte e.g. in stable agrochemical dispersions including water soluble electrolyte agrochemical, such as glyphosate and/or ammonium sulphate.

Surfactants in agrochemical formulations

Cleaning media based on liquid COand including from 0.01 to 5% by weight of the formulation of a cleaning additive which is at least one Cto Chydrocarbyl ester of a multi-carboxylic acid can be used in dry cleaning of textiles. Desirable cleaning additives are of the formula (I): R(COR)where Ris the residue of a Cto Chydrocarbyl group from which n hydrogen atoms have been removed, Ris a Cto Chydrocarbyl, particularly alkyl or alkenyl, group; and n is from 2 to 5; particularly Cto Cadipate esters.

Cleaning textiles

The free radical initiated addition polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated, particularly acrylic monomers in which the dispersed phase is stabilised by a surfactant including at least one anionic surfactant compound of the formula (I): R&#x2014;(OA)&#x2014;X where Ris Cto Chydrocarbyl including at least two double bonds; OA is oxyalkylene group; n is from 2 to 60; and X includes at least one acidic H atom, and is particularly a phosphate ester group, or a salt thereof, is described. The use of the surfactants of the formula (I) enable efficient emulsification and thus polymerization at temperatures above those at which non-ionic unsaturated surfactants are effective. The polymer latex products give polymer films having good water resistance properties.

Free radical polymerization using acidified ethoxylated conjugated fatty ether surfactants

An anionic surfactant of the formula (I): R&#x2014;Y&#x2014;(O)C&#x2014;(HR)C&#x2014;C(HR)&#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;(OA)&#x2014;X wherein one of R and Ris a Cto Clinear or branched alkyl or alkenyl, and the other is hydrogen; Y is O, or NH, or &#x2014;NH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;C(&#x2550;CH)&#x2014;, or &#x2014;N(CH&#x2014;CR(&#x2550;CH))&#x2014;CH&#x2014;C(&#x2550;CH)&#x2014; where Ris hydrogen or methyl; when Y is O, Ris hydrogen, or a salt, or a Cto Clinear or branched alkyl, or an optionally substituted Cto Clinear or branched alkenyl; when Y is NH, or &#x2014;NH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;(&#x2550;CH)&#x2014;, or &#x2014;N(CH&#x2014;CR(&#x2550;CH))&#x2014;CH&#x2014;C(&#x2550;CH)&#x2014; where Ris hydrogen or methyl, Ris hydrogen or methyl; OA is an oxyalkylene group; n is 2 to 100; and X is a group comprising at least one acidic H atom, or a salt thereof, and the use thereof in free radical initiated addition polymerisation, particularly emulsion polymerisation.

Anionic surfactants

Novel chemical compounds which have formula CH.sub.3 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 )(A)R in which (A) is a polyalkylene oxide chain comprising 5 to 18 alkylene oxide residues in which there are 0 to 10 propylene oxide residues for every 10 ethylene oxide residues and R is a C.sub.8 to C.sub.18 alkyl group are suitable for use as low foam surfactants or antifoaming agents in cleaning processes and rinsing applications.
