A process for producing a biomass for use in the treatment of Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reaction water includes introducing a nutrient component comprising Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P), and water into an aerobic reaction zone containing a sewage sludge, and maintaining, in the aerobic reaction zone and under aerobic conditions, a F/M ratio of 0.25-2 kg COD/kg MLSS, where F/M=Food to Microorganism Ratio; COD=Chemical Oxygen Demand, expressed as mg oxygen/B of liquid in the aerobic reaction zone; and MLSS=Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids, expressed as mg solids in the aerobic reaction zone/B of liquid in the aerobic reaction zone. The F/M ratio is maintained for a period of time, to produce a biomass suitable for use in the treatment of FT reaction water.

Production of biomass for use in the treatment of Fischer-Tropsch reaction water

A process () for at least partially removing hydrogen cyanide from synthesis gas includes feeding a synthesis gas () containing hydrogen cyanide to a gas-liquid contacting stage () and, in the gas-liquid contacting stage (), contacting the synthesis gas with an aqueous washing solution () comprising at least one dissolved metal salt, with metal cations of the metal salt being capable of forming metal cyanide complexes and/or metal cyanide precipitates, and weak acid anions of the metal salt serving to buffer the pH of the washing solution in a range between 6 and 10. Hydrogen cyanide is washed from the synthesis gas by the washing solution to form a treated synthesis gas () and a spent washing solution (). From time to time or continuously, at least a portion of the spent washing solution is withdrawn from the gas-liquid contacting stage. The treated synthesis gas () is also withdrawn from the gas-liquid contacting stage.

A process for the production of purified water from Fischer-Tropsch reaction water wherein the purified water is an aqueous stream having a COD of between 20 and 500 mg/l, a pH of between 6.0 and 9.0, a suspended solids content of less than 250 mg/l and a total dissolved solids content of less than 600 mg/l, and wherein the process includes at least the steps of a primary treatment stage comprising an equilibrium staged separation process having at least one stage for removing at least a fraction of non-acid oxygenated hydrocarbons from the Fischer-Tropsch reaction water to produce a primary water enriched stream, a secondary treatment stage comprising liquid-liquid extraction for removing at least a fraction of organic acids from at least a portion of the primary water enriched stream to produce a secondary water enriched stream, a tertiary treatment stage comprising biological treatment for removing at least a fraction of acidic oxygenated hydrocarbons from at least a portion of the secondary water enriched stream to produce a tertiary water enriched stream and a quartic treatment stage comprising solid-liquid separation for removing at least some solids from at least a portion of the tertiary water enriched stream.

A process for the production of highly purified water from Fischer-Tropsch reaction water, which process includes at least the steps of a primary treatment stage comprising biological treatment for removing at least a fraction of dissolved organic carbon from the Fischer-Tropsch reaction water to produce a primary water-enriched stream, a secondary treatment stage comprising solid-liquid separation for removing at least some solids from at least a portion of the primary water-enriched stream to produce a secondary water-enriched stream, and a tertiary treatment stage comprising a dissolved salt and organic removal step for removing at least some dissolved salts and organic constituents from at least a portion of the secondary water-enriched stream.
