A new dielectric material for a communication cable has a dielectric base with strength members embedded therein. By a new process, vacuum voids are formed in the dielectric base and at least partially contain or abut the strength members. The material is particularly well suited for a first dielectric tape, where the cable includes a first insulated conductor, the first dielectric tape and a second insulated conductor, with the first insulated conductor being twisted with the second insulated conductor with the first dielectric tape residing between the first insulated conductor and the second insulated conductor. The material is also suitable for a separator of the cable serving to separate twisted pairs from each other within the cable, as well as other components of the cable, such as an insulation layer of one or more of the insulated conductors of the twisted pairs.

High strength dielectric member for a communications cable

A cable includes a jacket surrounding first and second twisted pairs, as well as, first and second dielectric tapes. In alternative or supplemental embodiments of the invention, the first dielectric tape has a cross sectional shape, which presents first and second recessed portions; the first dielectric tape is different in shape or material content as compared to a second dielectric tape; the insulated conductors of the first and second twisted pairs are identical in appearance, while the first and second dielectric tapes are different in appearance; and/or the first dielectric tape has a hollow core possessing a gas or material with a lower dielectric constant.

Separator tape for twisted pair in LAN cable

A dielectric isolator for a twisted pair cable includes a body formed as an elongate strip with a top surface, bottom surface, a first side edge and a second side edge. A first slot is formed in the first side edge and extends at least half way toward the center of the isolator. A second slot is formed in the second side edge and extends at least half way toward the center of the isolator. During cable manufacturing, first and second wedges open the first and second slots. First and second twisted pairs are inserted into the first and second opened slots, respectively. Third and fourth twisted pairs reside at the top and bottom surface, respectively.

Low cost extrudable isolator from slit-tape

A cable includes a jacket surrounding first and second insulated conductors and a first dielectric tape, wherein the first insulated conductor is twisted with the second insulated conductor with the first dielectric tape residing therebetween to form a first twisted pair. The cable's jacket may also surround additional twisted pairs, which are similarly formed. In alternative or supplemental embodiments of the invention, the first dielectric tape has a hollow core possessing a gas or material with a lower dielectric constant and/or at least a first side of said first dielectric tape facing to said first insulated conductor includes a plurality of ridges and valleys.

A cable includes a spacer surrounding a cable core. The cable core includes four twisted pairs. A separator is disposed amongst the twisted pairs. The separator may be formed with three layers, wherein a middle layer is conductive and outer layers are nonconductive. A jacket surrounds the spacer, and a shielding layer may reside between the jacket and the spacer. The spacer may be formed of plural fibers or a polymer. Preferably, the spacer presents a lower dielectric constant per unit volume than the jacket. The separator may have a tape shape or a plus shape.

Shielded cable with UTP pair environment

A cable, of the twisted pair or fiber optic type, includes conductors for permitting patch cord tracing between ports. In the case of a twisted pair cable, the conductors may be embedded within, or attached to a surface of, a separator. Alternatively, in the case of a twisted pair cable, the conductors may be embedded within, or attached to a surface of, a jacket. In the case of a fiber optic cable, the conductors may be located amongst strength members. Alternatively, in the case of a fiber optic cable, the conductors may be embedded within, or attached to a surface of, a jacket.

Conductive elements in cable jackets and separators

A method for forming a cabling media includes providing a wire pair including first and second conductor members. Each of the first and second conductor members includes a respective conductor and a respective insulation cover surrounding the conductor thereof. The first and second conductor members are twisted about one another to form a twisted wire pair having a twist length that purposefully varies along a length of the twisted wire pair. The method may include: imparting a purposefully varied pretwist to the wire pair using a wire pair twist modulator; and imparting additional twist to the wire pair using a wire pair twisting device downstream of the wire pair twist modulator.

Methods and apparatus for forming a cable media

An apparatus for forming a cabling media using a wire pair including first and second conductor members, each of the first and second conductor members including a respective conductor and a respective insulation cover surrounding the conductor thereof, includes a wire pair twisting device and a wire pair twist modulator. The wire pair twisting device is adapted to twist the first and second conductor members about one another to form a twisted wire pair. The wire pair twist modulator is upstream of the wire pair twisting device. The wire pair twist modulator includes an engagement member to hold the first and second conductor members at a hold location to restrict rotation of the first and second conductor members about one another. The apparatus defines a twist zone extending from the hold location to a twist initiation location of the wire pair twisting device. The wire pair twist modulator is operable to move the engagement member along a control axis to modulate the length of the twist zone and thereby the twist length of the wire pair to form the twisted wire pair with a twist length that purposefully varies along a length of the twisted wire pair.

Methods and apparatus for forming cable media

A cable includes a jacket surrounding first and second insulated conductors and a first dielectric tape, wherein the first insulated conductor is twisted with the second insulated conductor with the first dielectric tape residing therebetween to form a first twisted pair. The cable's jacket may also surround a similarly formed second twisted pair. In alternative or supplemental embodiments of the invention, the first insulated conductor includes a first conductor surrounded by a layer of first dielectric insulating material having a radial thickness of about 7 mils or less; the first dielectric tape has a first width which is equal to or less than the diameters of the first and second insulated conductors plus a thickness of the first dielectric tape; the first dielectric tape has a cross sectional shape, which presents first and second recessed portions for seating the first and second insulated conductors; twist lengths of the first and second twisted pairs are between approximately 0.22 to 0.38 inches and different from each other; the first dielectric tape is different in shape, size or material content as compared to a second dielectric tape of the second twisted pair; the insulated conductors of the first and second twisted pairs are identical in appearance, while the first and second dielectric tapes are different in appearance; and/or the first dielectric tape has a hollow core possessing a gas or material with a lower dielectric constant.

A twisted pair cable and a method of making the twisted pair cable are described. First and second insulated conductors are twisted about each other to form a twisted pair. A first insulating material surrounds a first conductor to form the first insulated conductor. In a first alternative or supplemental embodiment, the first insulating material directly abuts a circumference of the first conductor and has a first area with a first radial thickness and a second area with a thinner radial thickness. In a second alternative or supplemental embodiment, the first insulating material has a first area with a first radial thickness and a second area with a thinner radial thickness and the first area resides along a portion of the first insulated conductor which is abutting the second insulated conductor.

Reduced size in twisted pair cabling

A data transmission pair includes first and second longitudinally extending electrical conductors each having a longitudinally extending, substantially flat side surface. The first and second conductors are paired such that their respective flat side surfaces face one another. The pair further includes an insulation cover having a separator portion and surrounding the first and second conductors. The separator portion is interposed between and separates the respective flat side surfaces of the first and second conductors.
