In a method for controlling the interface level between a liquid inventory and an overlying steam chamber in a subterranean petroleum-bearing formation, an inflow relationship is developed to predict the vertical position in a gravity field of the interface between two fluids with a density contrast (most commonly a water/oil emulsion and steam), relative to a horizontal producer well. The inflow relationship is applied to producer well completions by designing the completion to raise or lower sand face pressures over the horizontal length of the well. This pressure distribution will affect liquid levels according to the inflow relationship. Axial flow relationships for the liquid inventory may be developed to facilitate estimation of liquid levels at selected locations. Axial flow relationships for the steam chamber may also be developed to estimate the effect of the injector well completion on the steam chamber pressure and, in turn, the liquid level.

Method for controlling fluid interface level in gravity drainage oil recovery processes with crossflow

In a method for controlling interface level between a liquid inventory and an overlying steam chamber in a subterranean petroleum-bearing formation, an inflow relationship is developed to predict the vertical position in a gravity field of the interface between the two fluids (liquid and steam) with a density contrast relative to a horizontal producer well. The inflow relationship is applied to producer well completions by designing the completion to raise or lower sand face pressures according to mobility variations over the horizontal length of the well. This pressure distribution will affect liquid levels according to the inflow relationship. The completion can include tubing-conveyed or liner-conveyed flow control devices to create flow network that provides a customized sand face pressure distribution. Axial flow relationships between adjacent locations along the producer well may be modeled in order to develop an axial flow network to facilitate estimation of liquid levels at selected locations.

A method for distributing injection fluid in a horizontal well bore in fluid communication with hydrocarbon bearing formation begins by determining flow resistance characteristics of the formation along at least a portion of the length of the horizontal well bore. An injection tubing string having a sidewall defining a tubing bore is injected into the horizontal well bore. The tubing string is provided with ports having a selected distribution and geometry. The annulus geometry is selectively controlled along the length of the tubing string through at least one of axial distribution of eccentricity and flow area of the annulus, so as to provide selected flow restriction characteristics along the annulus, such that when injection fluid is pumped into the tubing, a resulting flow resistance network is formed by the tubing bore, the ports, the annulus and the formation, resulting in a desired distribution of the fluid into the formation.

An apparatus for handling tubular goods which includes an elongate tubular body having a peripheral sidewall and opposed ends. The peripheral sidewall has a plurality of axial slots arranged circumferentially around the tubular body parallel to an axis of the tubular body. An articulating coupling protrudes from at least one of the opposed ends. The articulated coupling includes an insert positioned within the tubular body with radial pins that engage the slots, the pins being axially movable along the slots. A gripping assembly is provided at one of the opposed ends for engaging a tubular good.

An apparatus for handling tubular goods which includes an elongate body having a coupling end adapted for mating engagement with a tubular good. The coupling end includes a structural member, a flexible cylindrical cage and a pressure member. Longitudinal strips joined at their opposed ends form the cage coaxial with and connected to the structural member of the body. The coaxial pressure member is disposed in an annulus between the structural member and the cage. The pressure member is adapted to cause radial displacement of the cage, thereby exerting a gripping force to maintain the mating engagement between the tubular good and the coupling end enabling a transfer of force between the body and the tubular good.

Method and apparatus for handling tubular goods

A method for preparing casing for use in a wellbore such as for example, in preparation, for use to line a borehole through a formation or to act as a drill string and thereafter to remain in hole. In the method, a device supporting the use of the wellbore casing is crimped onto the outer surface of the casing. The device supporting casing use can be to facilitate run in through the borehole, to maintain positioning relative to the borehole, to accommodate wear against the wall of the borehole into which the casing is run or to enhance the results of cementing. The devices supporting the use of the casing are attached by crimping to the casing to create a connection having structurally significant axial and torque load transfer capacity.

Method for preparing casing for use in a wellbore

A plurality of steel rings are crimped or shrink fitted onto a joint of steel well casing to produce the casing anchor. The rings and joint are sufficiently interlocked so that, when the anchor is cemented in a well, the joint can transfer axial load from the casing string to the cement through the rings to provide resistance to axial displacement of the anchor relative to the surrounding earth material.
