A process for preparing large dimension emulsion polymer particles and the polymer products of the process are disclosed. In one embodiment, the invention provides particles having a high aspect ratio, having a shape described by a long axis and an intersecting short axis. These particles range in shape from egg-like, through rod-like, up to extended filaments. In another embodiment, the invention relates to large, nearly spherical emulsion polymer particles.

There is disclosed a process of thickening an aqueous system comprising adding to the system aqueous dispersions of water-insoluble emulsion copolymers of (1) about 10-70% by weight of (meth)acrylic acid or itaconic acid, (2) about 0.5-25% by weight of an alkyl poly(oxyethylene) itaconate, and (3) at least 25% by weight, to a total of 100%, of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl (meth)acrylate, and, optionally, included in the total monomer mixture a small amount of (4) about 0.05-1% by weight of a polyethylenically unsaturated monomer. The copolymers, when neutralized and solubilized by addition of an alkali, are high efficiency thickeners for aqueous systems and have improved tolerance to ionic or electrolyte content. Typical systems that can be thickened are paint latices, cosmetic preparations, food preparations, ionic detergents, dye pastes for textiles, pharmaceuticals, and oil well drilling muds. Surfactants enhance the thickening properties afforded by the copolymers.

Alkyl poly(oxyalkylene) esters of acrylate oligomers and copolymers

A water soluble, vinyl addition polymer of acrylamide comprising a hydrophobic terminal group is useful as an adsorbate and as a flow modifier in aqueous systems. The polymer is particularly useful as a thickening agent or rheology modifier for water based multiphase systems, a block improvement additive in water based coatings formulations, a stabilizer for aqueous emulsions (including polymer emulsions), a transfer aid in water based ink or roll coater formulations, a surfactant and a dispersant. The disclosure also comprises a solution polymerization method of preparing the polymer.

Nonionic and anionic water-soluble addition copolymers of acrylamide and N-substituted acrylamides are useful as flow modifiers in and as adsorbates from aqueous systems, particularly multiphase systems. The copolymers have a weight average molecular weight greater than 30,000 and are useful for many purposes including as thickening agents or rheology modifiers for water based systems, block improvement additives in water based coating formulations, and transfer aids in water based ink or roll coater formulations.

Novel, versatile aminolysis products are obtained by aminolyzing, with a polyamine of aliphatic nature, an oligomeric homopolymer of an alkyl methacrylate in which the alkyl group contains from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an oligomeric copolymer of at least two alkyl methacrylates, such oligomers being produced from monomeric alkyl methacrylates by anionic polymerization to provide number average molecular weights in the range of 600 to 10,000 and preferably in the range of 1,000 to 5,000. Alternatively, an anionically polymerized homo-oligomer of a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)-alkyl acrylate or co-oligomer of at least two alkyl acrylates in which the alkyl in at least one monomer has from 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the co-oligomer, and the alkyl in the comonomers may have from 1 to 18 or more carbon atoms, are aminolyzed with a polyamine of aliphatic nature. Instead of oligomers obtained by anionic polymerization of esters of acrylic acid or of esters of methacrylic acid, there may be used in the aminolysis, oligomers of corresponding low molecular weight obtained by free radical polymerization, and in this version there may also be included copolymers (not obtainable by anionic polymerization) of an ester of methacrylic acid with an ester of acrylic acid and also copolymers of one or more such esters with monomers not of ester type, such as styrene. The aminolysis products have outstanding utility in the coatings field, particularly as the hardener for curing epoxy resins.
