Self-heating systems for rapidly and effectively heating a comestible substance are disclosed. Self-heating systems generally include a reaction chamber and a heating chamber. The heating chamber contains a substance to be heated. The reaction chamber contains reactants that, when contacted, exothermically react. The containers and reactants can be configured to heat at least six fluid ounces of comestible substance in less than one minute. The solid chemical reactant mixture can comprise magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, and/or calcium oxide. Methods for heating at least six fluid ounces of comestible substance in less than one minute are also provided.

Self-heating systems and methods for rapidly heating a comestible substance

Self-cooling compositions and systems adapted to rapidly chill a substance in a compact container are provided. In some implementations, the composition comprises an aqueous solution and solid chemical reactants, wherein at least one solid chemical reactant is selected independently from the group consisting of NHNO, urea, and mixtures thereof; and a second solid chemical reactant is selected independently from the group consisting of NHCl, calcium sulfate, borax, phosphates, MgCl, carrageenan, and mixtures thereof. The self-cooling compositions and systems can have a wide range of applications such as cooling comestibles or medical assay kits.

Compositions and methods of using such compositions for treating subsurface soil in an aquifer to remove contaminants that may be present in water of the aquifer. The composition includes a first solution and a second solution. The first solution includes at least one chemical capable of being effectively bound to soil to form a sorbent matrix by reacting in the subsurface. A novel series of compositions with aqueous chemicals decontamination activity and their uses is described. The preparation of esters of fatty acids with polyols that contain lactic acid is also described. These novel compositions release hydroxy acid and fatty acids slowly into water providing activity over long periods of time with the compounds exhibiting biodegradable characteristics and aiding in the biodegradation of contaminants.

A formulation and a method of using the formulation for washing vehicles and vehicular tires comprising a surface protecting composition that removes soil while enhancing the gloss, providing a protecting layer, and is biodegradable, environmentally and consumer friendly. The formulation further pertains to a product which contains a highly biodegradable surface active agent that is impervious to hard water and can clean a surface with little mechanical action. The residual protective coating aids in the removal of any subsequent dirt and grime that the surface may collect.

The present invention relates to series of compounds with aqueous metal decontamination activity and their uses in removing metals from aqueous media. The compounds are esters of organic acids or alcohols with polyols that contain a sulfhydral group (&#x2014;SH). The compounds release sulfhydral slowly into the water providing activity over extended periods of time and exhibit biodegradable characteristics. The compounds may be used to remediate aqueous media.

The preferred embodiments provide for a family of novel compositions to serve as substrates that release hydroxy acid slowly over time. Preferably the hydroxy acid is an &#x3b1;-hydroxy acid, more preferably it is lactic acid. The compositions are preferably made by reaction of poly(lactic acid) with multifunctional alcohols. The microbes destroy or inactivate compounds which are capable of being reduced, such as nitrogen-containing organic compounds, oxygen-containing organic compounds, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and halogen-containing organic compounds.
