A system for detection of equipment connections to a thermostat. The thermostat has one or more terminals with a one-to-one connection to one or more loads respectively of heating, ventilation and/or air conditioning equipment, and one or more terminals with a one-to-one connection to electrical power. One or more detectors are connected one-to-one to each of the one or more terminals, respectively, for connection to the one or more loads, and the one or more connections to the electrical power. Each detector is connected to a processor. Each detector is configured to provide a signal to the processor relative to a corresponding terminal indicating a status of a connection of the terminal to a load or to the electrical power.

Detection of HVAC equipment wired to a thermostat

A relay assembly that includes a relay, a bypass switch and a controller. The relay includes an electromechanical switch with an open state and a closed state. The bypass switch is operatively coupled in parallel with the electromechanical switch of the relay, and also has an open state and a closed state. The controller is operatively coupled to the relay and the bypass switch, and is configured to switch the bypass switch from the open state to the closed state, then switch the relay between the open state and closed state, and then switch the bypass switch back to the open state. In some cases, the bypass switch includes a TRIAC. The controller may be configured to maintain the bypass switch in the closed state for less than 100 milliseconds before switching back to the open state.

Relay cycle life extender

A surge protection circuit for an electronic device such as an HVAC controller. In one example, the surge protection circuit may include a first voltage clamp, a second voltage clamp, a resistor, and an output port. The first voltage clamp may provide a first clamping voltage between a power input terminal and a common terminal. The second voltage clamp may provide a second clamping voltage that is less than the first clamping voltage. The resistor may be connected in series with the second voltage clamp, and the series connected resistor and second voltage clamp may be connected in parallel with the first voltage clamp. As such, a surge current at the power input terminal may be split between the first voltage clamp and the second voltage clamp. The amount of surge current that is provided to the second voltage clamp may be set by the value of the resistor.

An electronic assembly may have a display, a display holder, and a printed circuit board (PCB). The display may have a front side for viewing the display, a back side, and side walls extending between the front side and the back side. The display holder may have a recess for receiving at least part of the display, where the display holder may extend adjacent part of the front side of the display and adjacent at least part of the side walls of the display. The PCB may be secured relative to the display holder and adjacent the back side of the display. The PCB may be in operative communication with the display. In some cases, a spacer may be situated between the back side of the display and the PCB.

Surge protection for an electronic device

An electronic device may include a housing and a printed circuit board, where the housing has a front cover and a back cover that at least substantially enclose the printed circuit board. In some instances, the back cover may include an outer shell and one or more inward extending walls that extend inwardly toward the printed circuit board. In some cases, the inward extending walls, the outer shell, and the printed circuit board define two or more internal pockets within the housing. The pockets may, in some cases, separate one region of the printed circuit board from another region of the printed circuit board. In some instances, the one or more inward extending walls may be configured to provide support to a back side of the printed circuit board, which may be particularly useful when a touch screen display is mounted on a front side of the printed circuit board.

A water level sensor for a steam humidifier. The water level sensor includes a plurality of conductive probes, where the plurality of conductive probes includes at least one common probe and a plurality of water level probes. Each of the conductive probes are separated from each other conductive probe. The water level sensor further includes a non-conductive overmolding covering at least a portion of each of the conductive probes. The non-conductive overmolding defines a flange configured to seal an opening in a tank of the steam humidifier and an electrical connection point configured to receive an electrical connector for providing electrical connections to each of the conductive probes. A steam humidifier is also disclosed.

Water level sensor for steam humidifier

A system and method for controlling operation of an ultraviolet air treatment device including an ultraviolet lamp positioned to treat air within an air handling system that operates in either an on state or an off state. The method includes activating the ultraviolet lamp, and determining the operational state of the air handling system. The ultraviolet lamp is deactivated upon expiration of a predetermined time period during which the air handling system remains in the off state. The predetermined time period is preferably 30-60 minutes, preferably 40 minutes for residential applications.

System and method for controlling an ultraviolet air treatment device for return air duct applications

A humidifier configured to determine when the humidifier requires cleaning. The humidifier includes a tank for containing water, a heater for heating the water in the tank to generate steam, and one or more water level sensors for detecting the level of water in the tank, including detecting water at first level and a second level, where the first level is lower than the second level. The humidifier further includes a drain valve for draining water from the tank and a controller. The controller is configured to open the drain valve to drain water from the tank, measure a time interval required for the water to drain from the second level to the first level, and compare the time interval against a threshold value. If the time interval exceeds the threshold value, then the controller is configured to provide an indication to clean the humidifier. Methods are also disclosed.

Detection of deposits in steam humidifiers

A system, apparatus, and method for preventing thermal cycling of a ballast coupled to one or more lamps. A monitor circuit is provided to monitor for activation of the ballast's thermal protection mechanism. Such monitoring may include monitoring of the ballast's thermal protection mechanism itself, or monitoring lamp current and ambient temperature in the vicinity of the ballast to determine that the ballast's thermal protection mechanism has been activated. Power to the ballast is temporarily disabled when the ballast's thermal protection mechanism has been activated, thereby preventing thermal cycling of the ballast, and consequently of the lamps, when power to the ballast has been removed.
