An auxiliary power supply device includes an auxiliary power source and a booster circuit. The auxiliary power supply device is configured to be switched among a charging state, a holding state, and a discharging state. The auxiliary power source is configured to be switched between a serial connection mode and a parallel connection mode. The auxiliary power source is configured to perform boosting to supply power to the power supply target when the auxiliary power source is switched to the serial connection mode, and perform backup when the auxiliary power source is switched to the parallel connection mode.

An electric power steering system includes a vehicle speed sensor configured to detect a vehicle speed, a motor driving circuit configured to supply power to an electric motor, a main power supply and a capacitor that can supply power to a driving circuit, a charging circuit configured to charge the capacitor based on the main power supply, and an ECU for power source control that controls the charging circuit. The ECU for power source control drives the charging circuit to charge the capacitor only when the vehicle speed is lower than a first predetermined value and an inter-terminal voltage of the capacitor is lower than a second predetermined value.

When a vehicle is quickly steered while the vehicle is travelling at an extremely low speed, a load on an in-vehicle power supply is reduced without deteriorating a steering feeling by reducing a motor driving current. A steering speed is compared with a threshold. When the steering speed is lower than the threshold, the process proceeds to step S. In step S, a voltage value of a battery power supply, which is used as a prescribed value, is set as a limit voltage in order to reduce a motor consumption current. When the steering speed is higher than the threshold, a value 'V/n' lower than the prescribed value is set as the limit voltage to reduce a consumption current when the steering wheel is steered without driving. 'n' is &#x201c;delay adjustment parameter&#x201d;, and is a real number that exceeds 1.

Vehicle steering system

An electric power steering system includes: an electric motor that generates assist torque; an auxiliary power supply device including a capacitor connected to a main power supply and discharging electric power to the electric motor; and a control device that controls the auxiliary power supply device. There is a plurality of modes of connection between the main power supply and the auxiliary power supply device. The control device switches the mode of connection between the main power supply and the auxiliary power supply device, depending on the situation.

An electric power steering system includes: an assist motor that generate assist force for assisting steering of a steering member; a motor drive circuit that controls driving of the assist motor; a capacitor that is electrically connected to a main power supply that supplies electric power to the assist motor, the motor drive circuit, and electrical components; and a controller that controls charging and discharging of the capacitor. The controller discharges electricity to the electrical components when an amount of electric charge remaining in the auxiliary power supply is equal to or greater than a first threshold value in an engine start-up period in a vehicle.

An auxiliary power supply device includes a capacitor that is connected to a main power source, and that is able to discharge an electric current to an electric motor, the main power source supplying electric power to the electric motor; and a booster circuit that boosts a voltage of the main power source and applies the boosted voltage to the auxiliary power source. An operation of the auxiliary power supply device is controlled by a control device. When supply of the electric power from the main power source to the capacitor is started in a state where a voltage across terminals of the capacitor is equal to or higher than a voltage of the main power source, the control device increases the voltage applied to the capacitor by the booster circuit as the capacitor voltage increases.
