In a control apparatus for a general-purpose internal combustion engine including a generator as a power supply, the generator includes a main generator coil supplying power to the stepping motor, and an auxiliary generator coil supplying power to an ignition device of the engine. The apparatus includes ignition timing controller for, when starting the engine by a manual starter, detecting that an engine speed reaches or exceeds a predetermined engine speed not exceeding a connecting rotation speed of a centrifugal clutch to retard an ignition timing of the engine, thereby suppressing increase in the engine speed to less than the connecting rotation speed, and for restoring the ignition timing to its normal timing after a predetermined time elapses from start of retarding the ignition timing. Accordingly, it suppresses overshooting of an engine speed above the connecting rotation speed even if a delay occurs in closing a throttle valve by a delay in activating the motor.

An outboard motor has an internal combustion engine with a carburetor. The carburetor is designed to extend maintenance interval greatly by preventing or suppressing the deposition of solid matters in the gap between the intake passage and a butterfly-type throttle valve therein. The throttle valve is divided, by a valve axis about which the throttle valve turns, into a first valve part that turns from the downstream side to the upstream side with respect to an air intake direction when the fully closed throttle valve is opened and a second valve part that turns from the upstream side to the downstream side with respect to the air intake direction when the fully closed throttle valve is opened. The first valve part has an edge that moves to the upstream side past bypass ports when the fully closed throttle valve is opened, and the second valve part is provided with a through hole that allows air to flow therethrough at a flow rate necessary for idling when the throttle valve is fully closed.

A watercraft propulsion machine equipped with an outboard motor is provided. The propulsion machine includes a propulsion machine body and the outboard motor. The propulsion machine body is detachably mountable to a hull. The outboard motor is mounted on a rotary shaft provided at the rear of the propulsion machine body and oriented longitudinally of the propulsion machine body. The outboard motor is fixedly mounted on the rotary shaft which is rotatably mounted to the propulsion machine body, and is swingable relative to the propulsion machine body.

Thus, in any of a case when the tolerance of the purifying rate of the catalytic converter is set relatively widely with an engine output taken into consideration to a certain extent, and a case when the set range is shifted to a rich side of the A/R ratio with the engine output taken into serious consideration, the A/F ratio of the exhaust gas can be controlled properly to a desired target value.

An outboard engine system includes a 4-cycle engine. The engine includes an engine block, a cylinder head coupled to the engine block and having an intake port in one side thereof, a carburetor including a carburetor body disposed on one side of the engine block adjacent the intake port and having an intake passageway, and a bypass-type starting device mounted to the carburetor body, and an intake pipe means which connects the intake passageway and the intake port to each other. At least an upper half of the engine including the carburetor is covered with an engine cover. In such outboard engine system, the bypass-type starting device of the carburetor is mounted to the carburetor body between the intake passageway and the engine block. Thus, it is possible to achieve both of low-speed and high-speed performances and at the same time, to enhance the accuracy of an air-fuel ratio and provide a reduction in fuel consumption and an enhancement in nature of the exhaust gas, and moreover, to avoid an increase in size of the engine cover.

An exhaust gas emission control system for a 4-cycle outboard engine is disclosed. The engine comprises a mounting member; an engine block mounted on the mounting member; an extension housing coupled to the mounting member and extending downward therefrom; and an engine oil pan mounted under the mounting member within the extension housing. The oil pan has a recess formed therein in the lengthwise direction. An exhaust gas expansion chamber is formed in the extension housing for receiving exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold of the engine. The engine exhaust emission control system comprises a catalyst assembly positioned in the exhaust gas expansion chamber, the catalyst assembly having a catalyst case aligned with the oil pan in the lengthwise direction thereof. At least a portion of the catalyst case is disposed in the recess in the oil pan.

An engine E of an outboard motor O includes a carburettor 29 at an upstream end of an intake manifold 28, and an air intake 30 is detachably fixed to the carburettor 29 by two bolts 44. A cylinder block 21 of the engine E and a coupling portion 30-2 of the air intake 30 are interconnected through blow-by gas passages 40 and 41 with an oil separating chamber 39 interposed therebetween. The coupling portion 30-2 is provided at a location offset upwardly from axes of the two bolts 44. Therefore, both of the operation of the bolts 44 for attaching and detaching the air intake 30 and the operation of attaching and detaching the blow-by gas passage 41 to and from the coupling portion 30-2 can be conducted without any hindrance.
