A method of manufacturing a coil component having terminal electrodes with high mounting strength, includes: embedding an air-core coil in complex magnetic material being a mixture of resin and metal magnetic grains, molding the magnetic material so that both ends of the coil are exposed on its surface, curing the resin in the molding, thereby obtaining a magnetic body in which the coil is embedded, polishing and etching a surface where the ends of the coil are exposed, sputtering metal material onto an etched surface of the magnetic body, thereby forming an underlying layer across a surface of the magnetic body and ends of the coil, and then forming a cover layer that covers an outer side of the underlying layer, thereby forming terminal electrodes constituted by the underlying layer and cover layer.

Method of manufacturing coil component having terminal electrodes with high mounting strength

A coil component includes an air-core coil embedded in a magnetic body constituted by resin and metal magnetic grains. Both ends of the coil are exposed on the surface of the magnetic body, and the side on which both ends are exposed is polished and etched to form terminal electrodes. To be specific, an underlying layer of metal material is formed across the surface of the magnetic body and the ends by means of sputtering, and then a cover layer is formed. Where the magnetic body contacts the underlying layer, the areas where the underlying layer is in contact with the resin ensure insulation, while the contact between the underlying layer and the exposed parts of the metal magnetic grains ensures adhesion, thus increasing the adhesion strength with respect to the terminal electrodes.

An electronic component has a shaft, a flange formed at an end of the shaft and constituting a core together with the shaft, a coiled conductor wound around the shaft, and an electrode terminal formed on the flange and connected electrically to an end of the conductor; wherein the shaft and flange are made of metal magnetic grains containing Fe which are bonded to each other by bonding of oxide film formed on each metal magnetic grain, and the shaft is more densely filled with the metal magnetic material than is the flange. The electronic component can achieve size reduction and frequency increase by improving the magnetic permeability while also improving the plating property for the terminal electrode.

The coilintegrally has a part constituted by a helically wound coil wire, two leader partsprovided at the two ends of the wound part, and terminal partsconnected to the ends of the leader parts and wider than the leader parts, where the boundary between each leader partand each terminal partis positioned in the magnetic body, and the end of each terminal partis exposed from the corresponding side face of the magnetic bodyand folded in an L shape along the side face and bottom face.
