A stereo-graphic system has an optical apparatus, an imaging apparatus and a recording and reproducing apparatus. The right eye picture information and the left eye picture information are compressed along the first direction. The imaging apparatus has an imaging device which has an imaging area for providing an output image signal. The imaging area has a right region and a left region. A focusing device in the imaging apparatus focuses the right eye picture information and the left eye picture information on the right region and the left region respectively. The recording and reproducing apparatus has a recording medium, a recording device and a reproducing device. The recording device records the output image signal from the imaging device on the recording medium. Further, the reproducing device reproduces a reproducing signal from the recording medium. The reproducing signal is provided to a converter which expands the compressed right eye picture information and the compressed left eye picture information.

A method of converting two-dimensional images into three-dimensional images by producing from a two-dimensional image signal a first image signal which forms a basis and a second image signal delayed by a predetermined number of fields from the first image signal and taking one of the signals as a left eye image signal and the other as a right eye image signal. It is judged whether or not a scene represented by the two-dimensional image signal is changed. When it is judged that the scene is changed, delay indicating how many fields are there from a field corresponding to the first image signal to a field corresponding to the second image signal is set to a predetermined value, for example, zero.

In the present invention, two-dimensional images are converted into three-dimensional images by producing from a two-dimensional image signal a main image signal and a sub-image signal delayed from the main image signal. A field delay indicating how many fields are there from a field corresponding to the main image signal to a field corresponding to the sub-image signal is changed depending on the speed of the horizontal movement of the main image signal. The upper limit of the field delay is determined on the basis of vertical components of motion vectors detected from the main image signal. The field delay is so determined that it is not more than the determined upper limit.

A stereo-graphic apparatus has first and second imaging devices to provide a first image and a second image, respectively. The first and the second imaging device are spaced from each other to define a predetermined convergence angle. A distance detecting apparatus detects distance from the first and the second imaging device to an object for imaging. A first electric zooming apparatus receives a signal from the first imaging device and extracts image data of a predetermined area from the first image. A second electric zooming apparatus receives a signal from the second imaging device and extracts image data of a predetermined area of image. A control device controls the extraction of image data according to the distance information. According to the distance information, the extracting area is moved so that the focused object is located on the center of each of the provided images. As a result, the convergence angel is substantially changed according to the distance between the object and the imaging device.

The present invention relates to a method of judging the back-and-forth positional relationship between subjects. Amounts of horizontal movement of the subjects which are detected for detecting areas set in an image area constituting a 2D image are compared after being assigned plus or minus signs depending on the direction of the movement, thereby to classify all the detecting areas into two types of detecting areas in such a manner that the detecting areas where a relatively large amount of horizontal movement is detected are taken as first detecting areas, while the detecting areas where a relatively small amount of horizontal movement is detected are taken as second detecting areas. A target area is set in a peripheral portion in the image area, to judge which of the total number of first detecting areas existing in the target area and the total number of second detecting areas existing in the target area is larger. It is judged that the subjects in all the detecting areas whose total number existing in the target area is judged to be larger are positioned behind the subjects in all the detecting areas whose total number existing in the target area is judged to be smaller.

The present invention relates to a method of converting 2D images into 3D images by producing from a 2D image signal a main image signal and a sub-image signal delayed from the main image signal. In the present invention, a temporary field delay from the main image signal to the sub-image signal is found on the basis of data related to the movement in the current field of the main image signal (a first step). A target field delay is then found on the basis of the temporary field delay found in the first step (a second step). A true field delay used in the succeeding field is found on the basis of the target field delay found in the second step and the true field delay used in the current field (a third step).

A method of converting two-dimensional images into three-dimensional images. When the movement of a main image is fast, a main image signal is written into field memories for each field. When the movement of the main image is slow, the main image signal is written into the field memories at intervals of a predetermined number of fields. An image to be read out as a sub-image from the field memories is determined on the basis of the speed of the movement of the main image.

Correlated values at respective sampling points are found by a correlated value operating circuit on the basis of image data corresponding to each of sampling points in each of small areas in the present field and image data corresponding to a typical point in the corresponding small area in the preceding field which is stored in typical point data storing circuit. The correlated values which are found by the correlated value operating circuit are sent to an accumulating circuit and an average value calculating circuit. In the accumulating circuit, the correlated values at the sampling points which are the same in displacement from each of the typical points between the small areas in each of motion vector detecting areas are accumulated. In the average value calculating circuit, the total of the correlated values at all the sampling points in each of the motion vector detecting areas is calculated for each motion vector detecting area, and each of the results of the calculation is divided by the total number of sampling points in one of the small areas, thereby to find the average value of values obtained by accumulating the correlated values for each motion vector detecting area.
