There is provided a liquid crystal display apparatus having sufficiently small black brightness in an oblique direction. A liquid crystal display apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention includes: a liquid crystal cell including a viewer-side substrate, a back surface-side substrate, and a homogeneously aligned liquid crystal layer sandwiched therebetween; a first polarizer arranged on a viewer side of the liquid crystal cell; a second polarizer arranged on a back surface side of the liquid crystal cell; a first optical compensation layer arranged between the liquid crystal cell and the first polarizer; and a second optical compensation layer arranged between the liquid crystal cell and the second polarizer. The viewer-side substrate and the back surface-side substrate each have a thickness direction retardation Rth(550) of from &#x2212;10 nm to 100 nm, and a product A&#xd7;E is 300 or less.

Liquid crystal display apparatus

There is provided a polarizing plate with optical compensation layers that is excellent in antireflection characteristic: in an oblique direction while maintaining an excellent antireflection characteristic in a front direction, and that has a neutral hue in the oblique direction. A polarizing plate with optical compensation layers according to the present invention is used for an organic EL panel The polarizing plate with optical compensation layers according to an embodiment of the present invention includes in the following order: a polarizer; a first optical compensation layer; and a second optical compensation layer. The first optical compensation layer shows a refractive index characteristic of nx&#x3e;nz&#x3e;ny and has an Re (550) of from 230 nm to 310 nm. The second optical compensation layer shows a refractive index characteristic of nx&#x3e;nz&#x3e;ny and satisfies a relationship of Re (450)&#x3c;Re (550).

Polarizing plate with optical compensation layer and organic EL panel using same

There is provided a polarizing plate with optical compensation layers that achieves an excellent reflection hue and viewing angle characteristic, and has an excellent mechanical strength. The polarizing plate with optical compensation layers includes a polarizer, an optically anisotropic layer, a first optical compensation layer, and a second optical compensation layer in this order. The optically anisotropic layer shows a refractive index characteristic of nx&#x2265;ny&#x3e;nz, and has an Re(550) of from 0 nm to 20 nm and an Rth(550) of from 5 nm to 100 nm. The first optical compensation layer shows a refractive index characteristic of nx&#x3e;ny&#x2265;nz, and satisfies a relationship of Re(450)&#x3c;Re(550). The second optical compensation layer shows a refractive index characteristic of nz&#x3e;nx&#x2265;ny. A laminate of the first optical compensation layer and the second optical compensation layer has an Re(550) of from 120 nm to 160 nm and an Rth(550) of from &#x2212;50 nm to 80 nm.

Polarizing plate having optical compensation layer, and organic EL panel using same

As a result of a reduction in thickness of an IPS liquid crystal display panel, curl has started to occur in a structure where an optical film such as a polarizer or a retardation film is laminated to the IPS liquid crystal display panel. The present invention is directed to thinning a polarizer which is easily expandable and contractable, and thinning a retardation film located between the polarizer and an IPS liquid crystal display panel to enable the polarizer to come closer to the IPS liquid crystal display panel than ever before to thereby prevent curl of the IPS liquid crystal display panel.

Continuous optical film laminate, roll of continuous optical film laminate and IPS liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal panel which is capable of significantly reducing a thickness thereof as compared to conventional liquid crystal panels, and, when used in a liquid crystal display device using a liquid crystal cell such as an IPS-type liquid crystal cell, reducing oblique light leakage in a black state of the liquid crystal display device to enhance contrast.

Liquid crystal panel and polarizing laminate for use in the liquid crystal panel

The liquid crystal panel includes a liquid crystal cell, a first polarizer on one side of the liquid crystal cell, a second polarizer on the other side of the liquid crystal cell, a first optically anisotropic element disposed between the liquid crystal cell and the first polarizer, and a second optically anisotropic element disposed between the first optically anisotropic element and the liquid crystal cell. Absorption axes of the first and the second polarizers are perpendicular to each other. The first optically anisotropic element has a slow axis direction parallel to the absorption axis direction of the first polarizer. The second optically anisotropic element has a slow axis direction perpendicular to the absorption axis direction of the first polarizer. The first and the second optically anisotropic elements each have in-plane and thickness-direction retardation values within specific ranges, respectively.

A method for producing an optical film including a birefringence layer having a refractive index distribution that satisfies nx&#x3e;nz&#x3e;ny, by which productivity of an optical film becomes high because there are a few steps, and a contamination is reduced, is provided. The method for producing an optical film including a birefringence layer includes forming an applied film by applying a birefringence layer forming material containing a non-liquid crystalline material with a birefringence (&#x394;nxz) in the thickness direction thereof of 0.0007 or more directly on a shrinkable film, and forming a birefringence layer having a refractive index distribution that satisfies nx&#x3e;nz&#x3e;ny by shrinking the applied film through shrinking the shrinkable film.

Method for producing optical film, optical film, laminated polarizing plate, and image display

There is provided a circularly polarizing plate that can prevent light leakage in an organic EL panel and can suppress the warping of the panel to reduce reflection unevenness in a panel surface. A circularly polarizing plate according to an embodiment of the present invention is used in an organic EL panel, and includes a polarizer and a retardation film directly bonded to the polarizer. In-plane retardations of the retardation film satisfy a relationship of Re(450)&#x3c;Re(550); and a 90&#xb0; adhesive strength between the polarizer and the retardation film is 1.0 N/20 mm or more.

Circular polarizing plate and organic electroluminescence panel

Provided is a producing method for a retardation film with a reverse wavelength dispersion property, which is highly reliable in terms of a small wavelength dispersion change and is low in display unevenness due to a position dependence of a retardation variation. The production method is designed for a retardation film which satisfies the following formulas (1) and (2):0.7&#x3c;[450]/[550]&#x3c;0.97&#x2003;&#x2003;(1);and1.5&#xd7;10&#x3c;6.0&#xd7;10&#x2003;&#x2003;(2)(where: Re[450] and Re[550] represent, respectively, in-plane retardation values thereof as measured by using light of a wavelengths of 450 nm and light of a wavelength of 550 nm, at 23&#xb0; C.; and &#x394;n represents an in-plane birefringence thereof as measured by using light of a wavelength of 550 nm). This method comprises: a step of continuously conveying and supplying a long polymer film; a stretching step of stretching the polymer film in a direction transverse to a conveyance direction; a first shrinkage step of, after the stretching step, causing the polymer film to shrink in the transverse direction; and a second shrinkage step of, after the first shrinkage step, causing the polymer film to shrink in the transverse direction, wherein a shrinkage temperature T(&#xb0; C.) in the first shrinkage step and a shrinkage temperature T(&#xb0; C.) in the second shrinkage step satisfy the following formula (3):1&#x3c;()&#x2266;10&#x2003;&#x2003;(3).

Retardation film and production method therefor, polarizing plate, and display device

The retardation film of the present invention contains at least one of an epoxy resin cured product and an epoxy (meth)acrylate resin cured product. In the retardation film of the present invention, in-plane birefringence index thereof at a wavelength of 590 nm is preferably 0.001 or more and a birefringence index in a thickness direction thereof at a wavelength of 590 nm is preferably 0.001 or more.

Retardation film, method of producing the same and image display device

The retardation film of the present invention contains a thermoplastic polymer having at least a side chain component (A) oriented in a direction substantially orthogonal to a slow axis, and the absorption edge wavelength (&#x3bb;) of the side chain component (A) is 330 nm or more, and an in-plane retardation value (Re[450]) at a wavelength of 450 nm is smaller than that (Re[650]) at a wavelength of 650 nm. In the above-mentioned retardation film, the difference (&#x394;Re=Re[650]&#x2212;Re[450]) between the in-plane retardation value (Re[650]) at a wavelength of 650 nm and the in-plane retardation value (Re[450]) at a wavelength of 450 nm is preferably 10 nm or more. The retardation film of the present invention exhibits optical characteristics in which the in-plane birefringence is large and the difference between a retardation value on the short wavelength side and a retardation value on the long wavelength side is large.

Retardation film, optical laminated body, liquid crystal panel, and liquid crystal display

The present invention provides a transparent substrate excellent in solvent crack resistance, toughness, heat resistance, and flexibility. A transparent substrate according to an embodiment of the present invention includes: an inorganic glass; and a first resin layer placed on at least one side of the inorganic glass, wherein: the first resin layer contains a resin compound having a weight-average molecular weight in terms of polystyrene of 8&#xd7;10to 100&#xd7;10; and no solvent crack occurs when a mixed solvent containing 20 wt % to 95 wt % of at least one kind of solvent selected from the group consisting of acetone, N-methylpyrrolidone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and N,N-dimethylformamide is brought into contact with the substrate.

Transparent substrate

A method for producing an optical film including a birefringent layer having a refractive index distribution satisfying nx&#x3e;nz&#x3e;ny that can be produced by a small number of steps, contains less foreign matter trapped therein, and has high productivity. The method includes steps of: forming a coating film by directly applying a material for forming a birefringent layer on the shrinkable film; shrinking the coating film in a first direction by shrinking the shrinkable film; and stretching a laminate of the shrinkable film and the coating film in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction, wherein the material for forming a birefringent layer contains at least one resin selected from norbornene resins, polycarbonate resins, cellulose resins, polyamides, and polyurethanes, and wherein the birefringent layer has a refractive index distribution satisfying nx&#x3e;nz&#x3e;ny. An optical film produced by the method.
