A method for carrying out fuel injection using a variable nozzle hole type fuel injection nozzle and a jerk type fuel injection pump. The variable nozzle hole type fuel injection nozzle has in its tip a well formed by an enclosing wall in which are provided a number of nozzle holes (35). A rotary valve (7) rotatable by an actuator (9) is disposed in the well and has fuel passages (73) so provided in the same number as the nozzle holes (35) that the fuel passages (73) can be connected with the nozzle holes (35) to a degree which varies with the angle of the rotary valve (7). A non-injection period in the rotation of the jerk type fuel injection pump B is detected using an encoder pulse and when the jerk type fuel injection pump B is rotating at high speed the angle of the rotary valve (7) is changed in steps until the rotary valve (7) reaches a target angle (.theta.D) corresponding to a required nozzle hole area by the actuator (9) being driven a required number of times only in the non-injection period.

In a variable nozzle hole area type fuel injection nozzle using a rotary valve a drive arrangement of the rotary valve (7) comprises an actuator (9) mounted to the nozzle holder proper and a drive shaft (8) extending through an axial hole (43a) of the needle valve (4) and having its lower end reaching the vicinity of the lower end of the needle valve (4) and a coupling shaft (10) positioned inside a control hole (45) provided in the lower end of the needle valve (4) and as well as performing a torque transmitting function the coupling shaft (10) has a leak passage (10f) and a seat portion (10c) so that it can perform a valve function for controlling termination of a pilot injection and separately from the actuator there is provided a driving mechanism (14) for forcibly moving the coupling shaft (10) in the axial direction while the needle valve (4) is open to end the action of the seat portion (10c).

A fuel injection nozzle with which it is possible to control the nozzle hole area and the injection period so that the injection pressure, the injection period and the injection amount are suited to the load and the speed of the engine and with which it is possible to conduct a pilot injection and a main injection certainly and precisely by simple control using a small actuator just by rotating this actuator in one direction. The fuel injection nozzle is of a type having a rotary valve disposed in a well, the rotary valve being rotated by an actuator to adjust the opening area of the nozzle holes formed in an enclosing wall bounding the well; the enclosing wall has a conical inner surface and the rotary valve has at its upper end a pressure-receiving surface for receiving the pressure of the pressurized fuel and has at its circumferential periphery a conical seat surface of an angle matching the angle of the conical inner surface of the enclosing wall. A plurality of pairs of fuel passages each pair consisting of a first passage and a second passage whose opening area is smaller than that of the first passage each passage having one end opening at the pressure-receiving surface and the other end connectable with the nozzle holes are provided in the rotary valve spaced in the direction of its rotation.

A flowmeter which obtains the flow rate of a fluid by detecting the rotational speed of an impeller is provided with a transmitter for transmitting a laser beam or ultrasonic wave to the tip end of the rotating impeller, a receiver for capturing the laser beam or ultrasonic wave reflected by the impeller, and a data processing unit for calculating the difference between the frequency of signals captured by the receiver and the frequency of signals transmitted by the transmitter and for calculating the rotational speed of the impeller based on the calculated values.

A plurality of injection holes are circumferentially arranged in the peripheral wall of the hole at predetermined intervals and at axially different circumferential levels in the leading end portion of the nozzle body to introduce pressurized fuel, and the injection holes at each circumferential level are set different in diameter. On the other hand, a rotary valve has a plurality of fuel guide holes each corresponding to the injection holes at the respective circumferential levels. The fuel guide holes of the rotary valve and the injection holes of the nozzle body are arranged in such a relationship that while the fuel guide holes at one or more than one circumferential level are each made to communicate with the fuel guide holes at one or more than one corresponding circumferential level, the fuel guide holes at the other circumferential levels are not allowed to communicate with any injection holes.
