A carriage device of a floppy disk apparatus includes a carriage main body arranged for linear movement and a head arm extending parallel to the main body. The body and arm are formed of synthetic resin. First and second magnetic heads are respectively mounted on the main body and head arm, so as to oppose each other. Regulating members are fixed to the main body and head arm, to prevent expansion and contraction thereof. Each regulating member is made of a material having a thermal expansion coefficient and hygroscopicity lower than those of the synthetic resin.

Leaf spring is fixed at one end thereto to a carriage, and extended at a predetermined angle to the carriage. A part of the leaf spring has rigidity. A gimbal spring, which free from the carriage, is mounted on the rigid portion. Head is fixed to the gimbal spring. The head can move perpendicularly to the carriage by the operation of the leaf spring, and can roll and pitch by the operation of the gimbal spring. Thus, the head can follow to move elevationally upward and downward and incline to the disk-like recording medium and contact the medium with good contacting property.

In a horizontal recording medium, new information can be overwritten upon old information at a low recording density without erasing the medium. In a perpendicular recording medium, on the other hand, new information is recorded at a high recording density after having erased the medium. On the basis of the above features of the horizontal and perpendicular recording mediums with different recording densities, the apparatus comprises first magnetic head with a long gap for the horizontal recording medium, a second magnetic head with a short gap for the perpendicular recording medium, and a heat selector, in order to provide a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus compatible with both high and low recording density mediums.
