A ceramic-molding binder includes a vinyl alcohol polymer having an ethylene unit content of 2 to 19 mole %, a polymerization degree of 200 to 2,000, a degree of saponification of 80 to 99.99 mole %, and a carboxylic acid and lactone ring content of 0.02 to 0.4 mole %. The use of the ceramic-molding binder provides green moldings with better formability and handling properties during the formation of smaller green moldings of more complex shape, and also provides ceramic products of good quality, higher yields, and fewer ceramic cracks when obtained by sintering such green moldings.

Provided are a water resistant composition comprising a uniform mixture of (A) at least one of modified polyvinyl alcohol containing either from 1 to 20 mol % of &agr;-olefin units with not more than 4 carbon atoms, from 0.01 to 1 mol % of silyl groups, or from 1 to 20 mol % of &agr;-olefin units with not more than 4 carbon atoms and from 0.01 to 1 mol % of silyl groups and (B) an organotitanium compound having a chelating ligand, in a blend ratio of component (A) to the component (B) between 99.99/0.01 and 60/40 by weight; a coating agent comprising the composition; a thermal recording material having a coat layer of the composition; and an ink-jet recording material having an ink-absorbing layer of the composition.

A porous sheet is obtained by wet coagulating a polyurethane comprising a soft segment component of repeating units from a polycarbonate, those from a diethylene glycol-based polyester and those from a tetramethylene glycol-based polyester and a hard segment component of an aromatic diisocyanate and ethylene glycol. The polyurethane has excellent processability such as wet coagulatability and the obtained porous sheet has good durability and flexibility, in particular flexibility at low temperatures and is well usable for leather-like sheets.
