A liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal panel and an illumination device. The illumination device has a light guide plate and at least one spot light source on at least one side surface of the light guide plate. The light guide plate includes a large number of upper-surface arcuate cross-sectional grooves in a direction orthogonal to the one side surface on a surface thereof which faces the liquid crystal panel, and a large number of light-incident-surface arcuate cross-sectional grooves are formed in a thickness direction of the light guide plate on at least a portion of the one side surface which faces a position at which the spot light source is arranged. A relationship is provided between a contact angle Oa of the upper-surface arcuate cross-sectional grooves and a contact angle Ea of the light-incident-surface arcuate cross-sectional grooves.

In a liquid crystal display device having the so-called side-edge type backlight system which comprises: a liquid crystal display panel; a light guide plate being disposed opposite to a main surface of the liquid crystal panel; and a linear lamp being disposed along one of sides of the light guide plate, the present invention provides a plurality of grooves at a corner area of an edge of the light guide plate along which the linear lamp is disposed so that the plurality of grooves are extended in a direction slanted to the edge of the light guide plate. In accordance with this structural feature, the present invention enables a high quality image display performance of the liquid crystal display panel by suppressing the display irregularity appearing therein effectively.

Liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display having a liquid crystal display panel having a plurality of liquid crystal cells, and a back light that irradiates the liquid crystal display panel with irradiation light. The back light includes a light source, and a light guide plate having one side arranged adjacent the light source and having a planar surface with a plurality of small concaves. The planar surface is almost parallel to a liquid crystal cell face, and a plane shape of the small concaves is almost rectangular.

A light guide plate which can achieve improvement of back-lighting or front-lighting luminance without increase of luminance of a light source, and a liquid crystal display device using such a light guide plate. A large number of concave small dots are formed in a surface of the light guide plate opposite to a light emitting surface of the light guide plate which emits light to a liquid crystal cell array so that light incident on the light guide plate from the light source is reflected at the concave small dots in the direction toward the light emitting surface of the light guide plate. Each of the concave small dots is shaped like a triangle with a sectional inclination angle of from 50 to 60&deg; in sectional view and shaped like an approximate rectangle or square in plan view in the direction perpendicular to a surface of the light guide plate and disposed so that a long side of the approximate rectangle or a side of the approximate square is approximately parallel with the longitudinal direction of the light source.

A liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal display panel having a plurality of liquid crystal cells and aback light that irradiates the liquid crystal display panel with irradiation light. The back light includes a light source and a light guide plate having one side arranged adjacent the light source and having a planar surface with a plurality of small concaves. The planar surface is substantially parallel to a liquid crystal cell face and a plane shape of the small concaves is substantially rectangular.
