An error correcting encoding and decoding system for transmission and reception of digital data is arranged for high error-correcting ability of both burst errors and random errors. In encoding apparatus a digital signal is processed as a plurality of word sequences. The words are interleaved into a different arranging order and are subjected to different relative amounts of delay. Then, first check words are generated to satisfy a parity detection matrix, such as a Reed-Solomon code matrix. After this, the resulting data words and first check words are again interleaved and are provided with respective different amounts of delay. Then, second check words are generated to satisfy a similar matrix. Finally, the first and second check words and the data words are interleaved prior to transmission. In complementary decoding apparatus, the cross-interleaved received signal is de-interleaved in a fashion complementary to the interleaving performed during transmission and the data words are delayed a complementary amount. The received data words are decoded by providing syndromes generated according to the parity detection matrix and burst or random errors are corrected by the check words.

Error correctable data transmission method

Successive data words are distributed to a plurality of respective channels to form successive data blocks, each data block being comprised of the data words in the plural channels. A first error correcting code is generated as a function of the words included in the data block, this first error correcting code being adapted for use in correcting at least one word which may be erroneous in the data block, as when the data block subsequently is received or reproduced. The data words included in the data block are selectively delayed, by different respective time delays, to form a time-interleaved data block comprised of time-interleaved data words. A second error correcting code is generated as a function of the words included in the time-interleaved data block, this second error correcting code being adapted for use in correcting at least one word which may be erroneous in the time-interleaved data block, as when the time-interleaved data block subsequently is received or reproduced. The first and second error correcting codes and the time-interleaved data block are combined to form a transmission block which may be transmitted or recorded on a suitable record medium.

Method and apparatus for encoding digital with two error correcting codes

In a digital signal transmission system in which interleaved sequences of digital words are transmitted on respective channels, the words in each sequence are added bit-by-bit in a first modulo-two adder to produce a first parity signal, the latter and selected ones of the sequences of digital words have imparted thereto different respective delay times, and then the sequences of digital words and the first parity signal are added bit-by-bit in a second modulo-two adder to produce a second parity signal. The second parity signal is delayed a predetermined amount and fed back to the first modulo-two adder. Then, the interleaved sequences of digital words and the first and second parity signals are serially transmitted on a transmission medium, which can be a video tape. The transmission system is capable of correcting burst errors occurring in more than three successive digital words.

Digital signal transmission system with encoding and decoding sections

In a digital signal transmission system, a predetermined number of words of digital information signals are added bit by bit in a modulo 2 adder to produce a first parity signal. The information signals and the first parity signal are delayed so as to have different delay times to each other, and the signals thus delayed are again added bit by bit in a modulo-2 adder to produce a second parity signal. The predetermined number of words of information signals and first and second parity signals are serially transmitted through a transmission line.

Burst-error correcting system

A PCM (pulse code modulation) signal transmission system processes sequentially transferred digital information words including two error correcting words consisting of a parity code word and a b-adjacent code word and adds them to the digital information words, time-interleaves each of the information words and its error correcting words in the block into time-interleave blocks distributed over a predetermined time, adds an error detecting code to at least one of the time-interleaved blocks, and transmits at least one time-interleaved block and error correcting code associated therewith. Method and apparatus for de-interleaving and error correction based on the three appended codes are included.

PCM Signal transmitting system with error detecting and correcting

Blocks of digital words containing an error correcting word are time interleaved into time-interleaved blocks of words, each of which contains no more than one word from any one of the original blocks. The time-interleaved blocks of words are converted to a bit-by-bit serial digital data stream which is time-base compressed to permit insertion therein of an error detecting code word and synchronizing signals. The resulting serial data stream may be recorded on a VTR. After reproduction, each time interleaved block is checked for errors and is then time de-interleaved to reconstruct the original blocks of digital words. If one or more errors exist in words in a time-interleaved block, no more than a single word in any one of the time de-interleaved blocks contains an error. Single-word errors in a reconstructed block are corrected using the error correcting word accompanying the reconstructed block.

Error correcting system

Groups of primary multi-bit digital signals arranged in digital words are spaced apart in sequence and are interleaved with related groups of secondary multi-bit digital signals, each of which is derived from, and encodes substantially the same information as, one of the primary signals. To minimize errors in processing signals, either the primary signals are delayed relative to the secondary signals, or vice versa, before they are interleaved. Cyclic redundancy check code signals are derived for each group of primary signals and each group of secondary signals and are interleaved in sequence with the primary and secondary signals. At a further stage in processing the signals, the checked code signals are analized and the related pairs of primary and secondary signals, which have been brought back into coincidence, are checked to determine whether one or both of the primary and the secondary signals of each related pair has been processed without error. If only one of the signals has been processed without error, that signal is selected for further processing. If both signals have been processed without error a predetermined one of them is selected for further processing. If neither one of them has been processed without error, the immediately preceding signal that was selected may be selected a second time. In order to incorporate all of the signals in the most convenient format, the secondary signals may comprise only the higher bit orders of the primary signals, eliminating some of the lower bit orders as containing unnecessarily detailed information. The number of bits thus omitted preferably causes a group of secondary signals plus the cyclic redundancy check code signals for that group and for the related primary group to equal the total number of bits of that primary group.
