A reel for fishing is capable of mounting a fishing rod in its leading end in the direction in which a fishline is played out. The reel for fishing has a reel body which is provided with a spool on which the fishline is wound up, a handle to be driven to rotate the spool in the fishline-winding-up direction, and a grip portion to be held integrally with the reel body at the time of actual fishing. An opening is formed in the reel body, which opening is capable of smoothly thumbing the spool along the direction of the thumb which is gripping and holding the grip portion.

A fishing reel of a double bearing type is provided in which the center of gravity of the reel and handle position are situated nearer to the position of the hand holding the reel to thereby be able to perform the fishline take-up operation of the handle stably. A fishing reel of an embodiment includes a reel main body which includes two left and right side frames. A support plate and a reel side plate are mounted on the outside of the left side frame, while a reel side plate is mounted on the outside of the right side frame. A spool is interposed between the left and right side frames and is fixed to a spool shaft. The spool is structured such that it can be rotated by a handle. A handle shaft is disposed in the rear of the spool shaft on the opposite side to a fishline play-out direction. Between the left and right side frames, a level wind device is disposed in front of the spool on the fishline play-out direction side.

A fishing reel of a double bearing type is provided in which the center of gravity of the reel and handle position are situated nearer to the position of the hand holding the reel to thereby be able to perform the fishline take-up operation of the handle stably. A fishing reel of an embodiment includes a reel main body (A) which includes two left and right side frames (1, 1'). A support plate (1') and a reel side plate (2) are mounted on the outside of the left side frame (1), while a reel side plate (3) is mounted on the outside of the right side frame (1'). A spool (11) is interposed between the left and right side frames (1, 1') and is fixed to a spool shaft (4). The spool (11) is structured such that it can be rotated by a handle (17). A handle shaft (6) is disposed in the rear of the spool shaft (4) on the opposite side to a fishline play-out direction. Between the left and right side frames (1, 1'), a level wind device (B) is disposed in front of the spool (11) on the fishline play-out direction side.

In a double-bearing type fishing reel, a front finger-placing section (50) is provided between the side boards (2a, 2b) of the reel body (1) above the spool (3) in such a manner that, when an angler grips the reel body (1), the thick part of the end portion of the thumb abuts against the front finger-placing section. A rear finger-placing section (55) is provided between the side boards (2a, 2b) of the reel body (1) behind the spool (3) in such a manner that the base of the thumb abuts against the rear finger-placing section (55). The double-bearing type fishing reel is exhibits an improved reel gripping characteristic.

A dual bearing type reel formed so that a spool (16), which is supported for rotation between left and right side plates (12, 13) of the reel body, can be removed by removing the side plate that is opposite the handle side of the reel. The spool is removed from the frame (10) of the reel body by passing the spool through a hole in the frame. The profile of the side plate opposite the handle coincides with that of the frame, except for at the front portion of the reel body. The periphery of the frame in the front portion extends farther in the forward direction. The dual bearing type reel provides a good feel of gripping. It also is compact, protects its side plate from frontal impacts, and has a configuration preventing dirt from entering between the frame and the side plate, so that the facility of removal and attachment of the side plate is maintained.
