An internal combustion engineat a standstill of a vehicle after cold starting can switch its combustion mode to a homogenous combustion mode or a stratified combustion mode. An operation range of the stratified combustion at the standstill of the vehicle after cold starting is expanded relative to an operation range of the homogenous combustion at the standstill of the vehicle after cold starting as an inclination of the vehicle decreases. With this technique, the operation range of the stratified combustion can be expanded while assuring an intake air negative pressure required for achieving the brake performance, so that HC reduction at the standstill of the vehicle after cold starting is obtained.

The linearity of the injection volume despite changes in battery voltage can be maintained.

A mechanism is provided for outputting reference signals in synchronism with the firing action of the cylinders of a multi cylinder engine. Correction coefficients are calculated for correcting deviations in the periods between the cylinders from the periods of the reference signals which are obtained during the fuel cut off state. The periods of the reference signals for each cylinder are corrected according to these correction coefficients, and the presence or absence of misfiring for each cylinder is determined from the corrected periods. On the one hand the determination of misfiring is prevented when input of external interference to the engine is present, and on the other hand the learning of the correction coefficients is prevented when instability has occurred in the reference signals during the fuel cut off state. Since the learning of the correction coefficients is prevented in different circumstances from those in which the determination of misfiring is prevented, the learning accuracy for the correction coefficients is elevated.

A first passage provided with a first valve for guiding vaporized fuel from a fuel tank into a canister, and a second passage provided with a second valve connecting this canister with an intake pipe downstream or a throttle, are provided. A pressure detecting mechanism is provided between this first valve and second valve, and a third valve is provided for leading fresh air into the canister. When the engine running condition satisfies a predetermined positive pressure test condition, the second and third valves are closed and the first valve is opened. In this state, the presence or absence of a leak is determined from the pressure detected by the pressure detecting mechanism. In other words, it is determined for example that the fuel tank has no leak if the pressure rises above a predetermined value.

The trouble diagnosis device which basically accomplishes a trouble diagnosis in accordance with a pressure difference between an intake pressure during execution of exhaust gas recirculation and an intake pressure during stopping of the exhaust gas recirculation. The trouble diagnosis device is comprised of a throttle valve opening degree sensor to produce an output representative of an opening degree of a throttle valve. The trouble diagnosis device is further comprised of a microcomputer which functions to sample the output of the throttle valve opening degree sensor at predetermined operation cycles of the microcomputer. Then moving averages of the sampled values are given, upon which a fluctuation amount of the moving averages is detected. The trouble diagnosis is stopped in response to the fluctuation amount larger than a predetermined value.

Trouble diagnosis device for EGR system

A failure checking apparatus for use with an internal combustion engine associated with an evaporated fuel purging unit having a canister adapted to accumulate evaporated fuel from a fuel tank. Communication is provided between the canister and the engine to introduce the evaporated fuel from the canister to the engine. The communication is interrupted to permit the canister to accumulate evaporated fuel from the fuel tank when a parameter related to a rate of evaporated fuel produced in the fuel tank exceeds a predetermined value. The communication is introduced into the canister and resumed to permit evaporated fuel to be introduced from the canister to the engine a predetermined period of time after the communication is interrupted. An air/fuel ratio at which the engine is operating is sensed for detecting a first value representing the air/fuel ratio when the communication is held interrupted and a second value representing the air/fuel ratio after the communication is resumed. A failure signal is produced, based upon a difference between the first and second air/fuel ratio values, to indicate that a failure occurs in the evaporated fuel purging unit.

The throttle valve position is sensed and the effective cross sectional area of the induction passage determined via table look up. The value thus derived is divided by the engine speed. A basic air induction quantity is then determined via table look up and subsequently modified using a correction coefficient to allow for the effect of engine speed on the amount of air inducted into each cylinder. The effect of injector position (viz., MPI/SPI) is taken into consideration and values suited for both generated in given embodiments. In the event that the maximum induction vacuum is limited by a BCD valve or the like, an embodiment anticipates the change in induction characteristics based on the engine speed.

The throttle valve position of an engine is sensed and the effective cross sectional area of the induction passage is determined via table look-up. The table is recorded in terms of three parameters. The value thus derived is divided by the engine speed of alternatively a product of the engine speed and the engine displacement. A basic air induction quantity is then determined via table look-up and is subsequently modified using a correction coefficient to allow for the effect of engine speed on the same. The effect of injector position (viz., multi-point injection/single point injection) and/or the provision of a swirl control valve can be additionally taken into consideration via the use of suitable algorithms or additional two and three parameter system tables. If an idle control by-pass passage is provided, the effect of the opening degree is considered when determining the effective cross-section of the induction passage.
