An optical disc recording medium includes a disc substrate, at least one recording layer which is disposed on one surface side of the disc substrate, a cover layer which is disposed on a laser incident surface side of the recording layer and which is composed of a light-transmissive resin layer, and a hard coat layer which is disposed for surface protection on a laser incident surface side of the cover layer and which is composed of a light-transmissive resin layer. The cover layer is formed such that its thickness decreases from the central portion to the peripheral portion of the disc, the hard coat layer is formed such that its thickness increases from the central portion to the peripheral portion, and the total thickness of the cover layer and the hard coat layer is substantially uniform from the central portion to the peripheral portion.

This invention relates to a fluorescent screen structure wherein a plurality of first electrodes (for example stripelike selected electrodes) having a plurality of fluorescent substances (especially fluorescent substances of different colors for a color screen) severally deposited thereon and second electrodes (for example stripelike reverse bias electrodes not for electrodeposition) not having the fluorescent substances deposited thereon between these first electrodes are provided on a common base (especially a glass substrate for a fluorescent screen panel) and a field emission display (FED) using this and methods for manufacturing these. According to the invention, even in such cases as when pillars for supporting a high vacuum are formed in an FED, a uniform fluorescent screen can be obtained without the pillars constituting an obstruction and a fluorescent substance can be deposited in such a way that it will not subsequently impair the level of a vacuum in a display in which the fluorescent screen is used and also a fluorescent substance can be deposited in a pattern such as a narrow stripe pattern having fine widths and fine pitches highly precisely and without mixed colors and with good manufacturability.

Method for manufacturing a fluorescent screen display

A light emitting device having transparent electrodes deposited in stripes on a glass substrate of a fluorescent screen panel, and black mask layers provided in stripes between respective electrodes so as not to overlap the transparent electrodes. Fluorescent materials are respectively formed on the transparent electrodes. Because the black mask layers do not overlap the transparent electrodes, the fluorescent materials have similar pattern to that of the transparent electrodes and do not overlap the black mask layers. Accordingly, the transparent electrodes and fluorescent materials may be finely patterned.

A fluorescent screen display panel includes selectively deposited fluorescent material on a plurality of color-coated transparent electrodes that are formed on a base member. A spacer support layer is formed on the base member between groups of the color-coated transparent electrodes and a further electrode is formed on the spacer support layer. The further electrode is not coated with fluorescent material. Spacer members that support a display panel are also formed on the spacer support layer.

A field-emission display has a phosphor panel assembly comprising a transparent electrode, a plurality of coated phosphor layers disposed on the transparent electrode for emitting light in response to bombardment of electron beams emitted from field-emission cathodes, a plurality of black insulating layers disposed between the coated phosphor layers, and a plurality of conductive layers disposed on the black insulating layers, respectively, between the coated phosphor layers and electrically insulated from the transparent electrode by the black insulating layer. The black insulating layers provide a black mask between the phosphor layers to improve the contrast ratio, and the conductive layers are effective to increase the percentage of electron beam utilization, thus improving the quality and resolution of displayed images. These advantages can be achieved without making image display unstable due to charging-up of the black mask and straying of secondary electrons.

A method of forming a fluorescent screen for a field emission display by electrodeposition comprises: forming a transparent solid electrode or transparent stripe or dot electrodes (1) in an effective area and a guard electrode (3, 8) in an ineffective area surrounding the effective area on the inner surface of a screen panel (13), immersing the screen panel (13) in an electrodeposition solution (12G, 12B, 12R, 12M) containing dispersed particles of a fluorescent material and contained in an electrodeposition tank (11), applying a voltage to the transparent solid electrode or the transparent stripe or dot electrodes, and a reverse bias voltage to the guard electrode (3, 8) to deposit particles of the fluorescent material only on the transparent solid electrode or the transparent stripe or dot electrodes to which the voltage is applied. The guard electrode (3, 8) prevents the deposition of particles of the fluorescent material in the ineffective area.

Method of forming a fluoresecent screen by electrodeposition on a screen

An image display comprises a plurality of picture elements arranged in a matrix and each connected to a switching thin film transistor and a capacitor. The switching thin film transistor is controlled to drive the corresponding picture element. The image display is capable of areal luminance and of displaying images in a satisfactorily high brightness.

Disclosed herein is an array of field emission cathodes of the type, in which each element is made up of a substrate 1 (which serves as a first electrode 1), an insulating layer 2 in which is formed a cavity 6, a cathode 9 formed in the cavity 6 and on the first electrode 1, and a second electrode 3 formed on the insulating layer 2, and the second electrode is coated with a protective metal layer having good conductivity and corrosion resistance. The record electrode (the gate electrode) protected from oxidation permits stable electron emission. Also disclosed herein is an array of field emission cathodes in which each element is made up of a first electrode 11 to apply voltage to a plurality of cathodes 9, a resistance layer 12, an insulating layer 2, and a second electrode 3 which are formed on top of the other, a cavity 6 formed in the second electrode 3 and insulating layer 2, and a cathode 9 formed in the cavity 6 and on the resistance layer 12, with the first electrode 11 having a void under the cathode 9. This structure prevents short circuits between the cathode and the gate electrode, which contributes to high yields and long life.

A planar display apparatus with a fluorescent screen formed on the inner surface of a front panel in a planar tube body. An electron gun is disposed at a position deviated in a vertical scanning direction from a region opposite the fluorescent screen, and a vertical deflecting electrode composed of a plurality of parallel electrodes is disposed at an opposite portion relative to the fluorescent screen on the side of a back panel opposed to the front panel of the planar tube body. In a space between the vertical deflecting electrode and the fluorescent screen, there is disposed an electrode structure having at least an electron lens scanning electrode composed of a plurality of parallel electrodes, a splitting electrode for splitting an electron beam from the electron gun into a plurality of beams, a modulating electrode, and horizontal deflection electrodes.
