A heat pump type air conditioner for an automotive vehicle has a compressor to which an outer heat exchanger and a first inner heat exchanger are connected through a three-way valve. The outer heat exchanger is connected at its refrigerant outlet to the first inner heat exchanger through one-way valve. The refrigerant outlet of the first inner heat exchanger is connected to a second inner heat exchanger through an expansion valve. The refrigerant outlet of the second inner heat exchanger is connected to the compressor. The second and first inner heat exchangers are disposed in turn downstream of a blower for generating an air flow for air-conditioning a passenger compartment of the vehicle. During a cooling drive the three-way valve is set to lead the refrigerant from the compressor to the outer heat exchanger. During a heating drive the three-way valve is set to direct the refrigerant from the compressor to the first inner heat exchanger while bypassing the outer heat exchanger. As a result, the air-conditioning capacity of the air conditioner is improved without changing the direction of refrigerant flow to the cooling and heating drive.

Even if temperature within a vehicle passenger compartment is kept at a constant value, passengers feel uncomfortable in summer for instance, because radiant heat is transferred from the vehicle body to the passenger. To allow the passengers to feel comfortable, the control apparatus comprises radiant heat sensors disposed within the passenger compartment; temperature adjusting devices disposed in the vehicle body, and controller for reducing the amount of heat transferred between the vehicle body and the passengers.

A heater unit comprises a casing through which air flows in one direction from an inlet to outlets. A heater core is disposed within the casing for heating air passing therethrough. In the above arrangement, air is difficult to pass through the heater core at a place adjacently behind the pivotal end of the air mix door whith respect to the direction of air flow. A transistor protection device in accordance with the present invention includes a base platform consisting of a flat aluminum board for fixing a power transistor with small screws or the like. A supporting plate is placed at a prescribed distance from the base platform, and the base platform and the supporting plate are separated by means of solid heat conducting rods and hollow rods through which are inserted conductors. The heat conducting rods are arranged to have their top ends to make contact with the bottom surface of the power transistor which is the portion of maximum heat production in the power transistor, in order to conduct the heat generated to the outside of the power transistor. Because of the better radiation capability which takes place in relatively thin rods, there are installed a plurality of the heat conducting rods. Moreover, on the heat conducting rods, in the section between the base platform and the supporting plate, there are provided numerous radiation fins stacked one after another in order to enhance the radiation capability of the heat conducting rods.

Transistor protection device

First and second outlets direct conditioned air into a vehicular passenger compartment. When one of the outlets is blocked, the other outlet is unblocked. A control arrangement ensures that the temperature of the output air is the same regardless of which outlet is unblocked. This is achieved by adjusting the position of an air mix door, which determines the extent to which air is heated before being delivered as conditioned air, in accordance with which outlet is unblocked.

A controller for a fan motor of an air conditioner in a vehicle according to the present invention is constructed to control the magnitude of a stream of air sent from an electric fan into a room of the vehicle so that the magnitude of a stream of air is reduced when a temperature of the outside air of the room falls down below a predetermined temperature in the heating mode of the air conditioner.

A cooling system for a vehicle is configured so as to adjust draft volume to the radiator through which engine cooling water is circulated on the basis of the engine operating condition e.g. the temperature of engine cooling water. The cooling system comprises a plurality of motor-fans for cooling the radiator, engine cooling water sensor means provided at radiator hoses, and operational mode control means responsive to the sensor means to selectively control operational modes including a parallel drive mode, a serial drive mode, a partial or single drive mode and an OFF mode. Thus, a desired power supply control for motor-fans is carried out in accordance with an operational mode selected by the operational mode control means, thereby enabling to finely adjust draft volume to effect a desired cooling of the engine.

Cooling system for vehicle

A by-pass passage is provided around the blower of a vehicle ventilation and/or air conditioning system in order to avoid the flow resistance caused by the blower when it is not energized and accordingly increase the amount of air which may be rammed into the passenger cabin at low vehicle speeds. The passage is controlled by a door which is opened when the blower is off and the system is conditioned to induct fresh air from outside the vehicle.
