An ester compound, for example, carbonic acid ester or succinic acid ester, is produced by catalytically reacting, in gas phase, carbon monoxide with a nitrous acid ester and optionally an olefin in the presence of a catalyst and in the presence of a chlorine-containing substance, bringing the reaction product-containing mixed gas into contact with a solid catalyst such as activated carbon or inorganic oxide to reduce the content of the chlorine-containing substance, cool-condensing the resultant mixed gas, and collecting the target ester compound from the condensed liquid.

An improved process for preparing a diaryl carbonate from a diaryl oxalate in a liquid phase by decarbonylation utilizes a reaction vessel composed of two or more reaction chambers which are connected in series. The process is composed of the steps of continuously introducing the diaryl oxalate and an organic phosphorus compound having a trivalent or pentavalent phosphorus atom and at least one carbon-phosphorus bonding into the first chamber and continuously recovering a reaction mixture mainly containing the diaryl carbonate from the last chamber under the condition that a mixture of the diaryl oxalate and the organic phosphorus compound is heated in the reaction chambers, while discharging carbon monoxide released from the mixture.

A carbonic acid diester is produced, at a high reaction rate with a high selectivity and stability, by catalytically reacting carbon monoxide with a nitrous acid ester, preferably in a gas phase, in the presence of a solid catalyst composed of a solid carrier and a catalytic solid material deposited on the carrier and comprising: (1) a first catalyst component comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of platinum group metals and compounds thereof; (2) a second catalyst component comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of lanthanide group metals and compounds thereof; and collecting the resultant carbonic acid diester from a reaction mixture discharged from the catalytic reaction step.
